Introduction of VCB and Relay
What is “VCB”? What does it do?
- Means “Vacuum Circuit Breaker”
- VCB makes and breaks the primary power circuit of a bay/line/feeder
- During opening, the arc is extinguished in a vacuum medium of a arc
chamber
- VCB has a spring charged mechanism for closing or opening
- Closing or opening is actuated via DC coils:- close coils, trip coils.
- A VCB is a non intelligent switching equipment.
- During fault, as Soon as VCB gets the tripping pulse from Relay, VCB
executes the “Breaking or Opening” operation and “Isolates” the faulty
section of the power system.
Introduction of VCB and Relay
What is a “Protective Relay” ? What does it do?
- Relay is an intelligent “Supervisory Switching Device” that “monitors
the inputs” and “initiates switching as outputs” when the inputs exceeds
a pre-designed “Set Value”.
- In power system, “Protective Relay” continuously supervises the power
system parameters (current, voltage, frequency etc.) and initiates “Trip
Signal” to VCB to trip and protect the power circuit, when power
system parameter exceeds a “Set Value” beyond normal condition.
- Protective relays are “Intelligent Device” that can “Sense, Analyze and
Distinguish” between the normal and abnormal condition of the power
system.

2b. Understanding Internal Interlock
1. VCB has shaft mounted auxiliary switch, that carries 09 (or more) pairs of NO and NC auxiliary
contacts.
2. When VCB turns On or Off, that switch simultaneously alters those NO contacts to NC and NC
contacts to NO. This auxiliaries can be used for Close, Trip, spring charging mechanism and VCB
status lamp indication.
3. Here, NO and NC contacts are called NO (52a) and NC(52b) contacts in normal condition.
4. Some circuits are built internally around those VCB’s auxiliary contacts (52a & 52b) designed by the
manufacturer.
5. Anti-pumping relay (10-1), spring triggered limit switch (LS) actuated relay (10-2) have energizing
coils. They also have NO and NC contacts.
6. Close coil , trip coil 1&2 doesn’t contain any auxiliary contacts. When coils are energized, they acts
like hammer that hits the mechanical triggers to release the closing spring and tripping spring’s
stored energy to turn On or Off the VCB.
