Functions in Real-Life

This document discusses representing real-life situations using functions and piecewise functions. It provides examples of scenarios that can be modeled as different types of functions, such as one-to-one and many-to-one relationships. Real-life examples are given for linear, piecewise, and other functions involving situations like cell phone battery charge over time and text message fees based on usage. Students are assigned to find additional examples of functions and piecewise functions that could model real-world contexts and write the corresponding equations.

REPRESENTING
REAL-LIFE
SITUATIONS
USING
OBJECTIVE:
• At the end of this lesson, you
should be able to represent
real-life situation using
functions.
REAL – LIFE EXAMPLE:
Let’s read some of the conversations and
determine if they can be classified as
function or not
SCENARIO 1: FUNCTION – ONE-TO-ONE RELATIONSHIP
SCENARIO 2:

FUNCTION – ONE-TO-ONE RELATIONSHIP

SCENARIO 3:

x Ana Kevin Sam Joey Lanie jen

y C C I BA M C

FUNCTION – ONE-TO-ONE, MANY-TO-ONE RELATIONSHIP

Question:
• Which of the following machines can be
considered as a function?
a. Television set
b. Paper shredder
c. Electric fan
The Function Machine
• Function can be illustrated
as a machine where there is
the input and the output.
Example:

• In a clothes dryer, what do you

think is the input, the function,
and the output?
• Solution: Putting wet clothes in
the dryer will cause the clothes to
dry. Hence, the wet clothes are
the input, the drying process is
the function, and the results (the
output) are the dry clothes.
• When you put an object into a
machine, you expect a product as
output after the process being
done by the machine.
• output (y) is dependent to input (x)
• we can say that y is a function of x.
Equation

+3

(X) (Y)

X+3 = Y or F(x)= X + 3
Let’s try a real-life example:
• If height (H) is a function of age (a), give a function
H that can represent the height of a person in a age,
if every year the height is added by 2 inches.

Age (a)

Height (h)
+ 2 inches

a + 2 = H(a)
ACTIVITY: BY PAIR
1. If distance (D) is a function of time (t), give a
function D that can represent the distance a car
travels in t time, if every hour the car travels 60
kilometers.

?
60km

Formula=?
At home, think of a situation that
function can be applied. Explain
your answer.
TRY IT YOURSELF!

Identify the input, process and output of the situation.

Assignment:

Give a function B that can represent the amount of

battery charge of a cellular phone in h hour, if 12% of
battery was loss every hour. What is the equation,
input, process and output of the situation?
Piecewise Functions
• But there are cases that functions
requires more than one formula in
order to obtain the given output. There
are instances when we need to describe
situations in which a rule or
relationship changes as the input value
crosses certain boundaries.
Piecewise Functions
• Each formula has its own domain, and the
domain of the function is the union of all
these smaller domains. We notate this
idea like this:

>, <, >, and <

Real life Situations
• A user is charged ₱250.00 monthly for a
particular mobile plan, which includes
200 free text messages. Messages in
excess of 200 are charged ₱1.00 each.
Represent the monthly cost for text
messaging using the function t(m), where
m is the number of messages sent in a
month.
Given:
• Situation 1: a charge of P250.00
per month in 200 messages or less
• Situation 2: P250.00 per month and
a P1.00 charge in every messages
sent that exceed to 200
Required:
• Input= messages sent in a
month
• Output = Monthly cost for
text messaging
T(m) = ?
Solution:
• 𝑡(𝑚)={250 𝑖𝑓 0<𝑚≤200
(if sending messages is not
exceeding 200)

• 𝑡(𝑚) ={(250+𝑚) 𝑖𝑓 𝑚>200

(in case the messages sent
were more than 200)
Activity: BY PAIR
• Instructions:
At home or in your community, look for at
least three (3) situations that could represent
functions or Piecewise function. From the
identified situations, write a sample problem
and its corresponding function equation.
Sample Format: Function
• Situation: The budget for food is a function of
the number of family members.
• Problem: Reyes family has Php ₱1,500.00
food budget for each member of their family
in a month. Express the total food budget (B)
as a function of number of family members (n)
in one month.
• Function: 𝐵(n)=1500n
Question

• What are your basis in

deriving an equation? In a
piecewise equation?
• What is Function and
piecewise function?
• What have you realized in
representing real-life situation
using functions? Piecewise
function?
You Can Do it!
A game at a theme park offers prize money
based on the number of balls you can
successfully shoot in one minute.
 0-7 successful shots: no prize
 8-15 successful shots: ₱150
 more than 15 successful shots: ₱200

Write a piecewise function that relates the

prize money offered to the number of
successful shots you make.
Assessment: ¼ crosswise

Illustrate or give example of functions

in real-life situations in a given field:

problem and its corresponding function
equation.
