Agenda
• Why do we need Labs?
• EVE-NG
• Virtual / Hardware Sizing
• Installing EVE-NG
• Getting the node images
• Tips
• Q&A
Why do we need Labs?
• Study for Certification

• Recap of courses (AATP)

• Verifying a solution for ourselves / partner / customer

• The „right“ tools for the „right“ Job

Why EVE-NG?
• Multivendor // Vendor neutral
• Virtual and Bare-Metal
• Easy to install

• From small to HUGE

• Watch out for copycats!

• Genuine: https://www.eve-ng.net/
EVE-NG‘s Flavors
• EVE Pro (Ubuntu 18.04) and EVE Community (Ubuntu 16.04)
• Everything you need can be done with the Community Edition
• However… Pro offers a TON of convenient „addons“:
+ Hot-Link-Add, Integrated Wireshark, HTML5-Desktop, EVE-Cluster
Virtual or Hardware?
• Ubuntu installed on BMS and EVE installed

Hypervisor Juniper

(KVM) [EVE] vDevice

• ESXi installed on BMS and EVE as VM inside ESXi

Hypervisor Hypervisor Juniper

Hardware
(ESX) (KVM nested) [EVE] vDevice

• Windows Client running Workstation, running EVE

OS Hypervisor Hypervisor Juniper

Hardware
(Windows) (Workstation) (KVM nested) [EVE] vDevice
Virtual or Hardware?
• What‘s your goal?

• Bare for „heavy Labs“, long-term PoC or permanent Labs

• Virtual for „Small“ Labs, temporary Labs,

„just testing stuff on the plane“

• Remember: v-Devices tend to be resource hungry

What Hardware? System Requirements?
• DL360G7 – 288GB RAM max. (18x16GB)

• DL360G8 – 768GB RAM max. (24x32GB)

• Dell, Lenovo, Fujitsu – doesn‘t matter! Use „beginning of year“ refresh

What Hardware? System Requirements?
• More Cores = More Performance!

• Use 10k/15k Disks or SSD‘s (if money does not count)

• RAM is not your worst enemy – it‘s the CPU / Disk

• Use EVE-NG Pro and build Clusters.

Cheap Servers combined can be way more powerful

• EVE can run on any System that allows virtualization

Ubuntu System Requirements count

• What do you want to do with it?
