4.chroma Subsampling

Chroma subsampling is a technique used in video and digital photography systems where the resolution of color information is reduced compared to the black and white luminance, since humans perceive color at a lower resolution. Schemes for chroma subsampling are labeled with numbers indicating how many pixel values per four original pixels are transmitted, with 4:4:4 indicating no subsampling where each pixel's Y, Cb, and Cr values are sent. YCbCr is a color space family used in video and photography pipelines where Y' is the luma component and CB and CR are the blue and red chroma components.

Chroma Subsampling

• Since humans see color with much less spatial resolution than black
and white, it makes sense to decimate the chrominance signal.
• Interesting but not necessarily informative names have arisen to label
the different schemes used.
• To begin with, numbers are given stating how many pixel values, per
four original pixels, are actually sent.
• Thus the chroma subsampling scheme "4:4:4" indicates that no
chroma subsampling is used.
• Each pixel's Y, Cb, and Cr values are transmitted, four for each of Y,
Cb, and Cr.
• YCbCr, Y′CbCr, or Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr, also written as YCBCR or Y'CBCR, is a
family of color spaces used as a part of the color image pipeline in
video and digital photography systems.
• Y′ is the luma component and CB and CR are the blue-difference and
red-difference chroma components.
