Representation of Function

This document discusses representation of functions. It defines a relation as a set of ordered pairs where the first elements are the domain and second elements are the range. A function is a special type of relation where each domain value is mapped to only one range value. Several examples are provided to demonstrate determining if a relation represents a function using ordered pairs and mapping diagrams. Functions can also be represented using graphs that satisfy the vertical line test or using function notation. Students are given problems to determine if given relations are functions.

Objectives

Identify the relation and function

Solve the following problems involving

functions
What is relation?
A relation is a set of order pairs. The domain of n relation is the set of first
coordinates and range is the set of second coordinates.

What is Function?
A function is a relation for which each value from the set, the first
components of the ordered pairs is associated with exactly one value from the
set of second components of the ordered pair.
Example 1
