Chapter 10: Applying Number and Using

Calculators
10.1 Units of Measurement
10.2 Converting Between Metric Units
Learning Objectives:
• Decide which units to use when measuring length, weight and capacity
• Convert from one metric unit to another

Keywords:
• Metric system, length, mass, volume, and capacity.
Warm up Activity

Write down the answers of the following questions.

1. Work out the following and check your answers on the calculator.
a) 2×1000
b) 0.3×100
c) 7÷1000
d) 20÷100
2. What do the following prefixes mean?
a) kilo. How many metres are there in a kilometre?
b) centi. How many centimetres are there in a metre?
c) milli. How many millimetres are there in a metre?

Measuring Length, Weight and Capacity
 What is a metric system?
The metric system is a widely adopted international system of measurement except for the United States.
Metric systems of units have evolved since they were first adopted in France in 1795. The metric system is
a decimal measuring system which is based on powers of ten and uses the following prefixes:

These prefixes are then followed by a base unit.

Reflection

 Go to the chat function if the lesson is online or raise your hands in class to
reflect on the learning objectives and use the RAG reflection method to show
your understanding of the lesson.
 Red means there is a problem that must be addressed soon or raise 2 hands.
 Amber means that some work is required and certainly should be done before
next assignment or raise 1 hand.
 Greenmeans there is no problem in comparison with other areas or keep your
hands down.
