Introduction Time: 2 Minutes

Walk a few steps while holding an umbrella in the sun.

Why do people use umbrellas on hot


and sunny days?

Do you think the umbrella saves them


from the sun?

Why do you think so?

People use umbrellas on sunny days for shade/ protection from the sun as it is made
up of an opaque material. Opaque materials do not allow light to pass through.
Key Learning Points

A shadow is the dark area formed by an opaque object when


it blocks light.

Shadows are always dark.


They have no colour or details like eyes or a mouth.

The shadow may not be the same shape or size of the object.
The shape and size of the shadow will change depending on the light
source. Example: sun or flashlight

The size of the shadow is smaller, if the object is far from the
source of light.

The size of the shadow is larger, if the object is close to the


source of light.
Group Activity (Outside Activity) Time: 15 Minutes

Opaque objects usually make shadows. Use your favourite toy to make
shadow shapes in the sunlight.
