Lesson 3 (Algebraic Expressions)

This document provides an introduction to algebraic expressions for a 7th grade math class. It defines key terms like variables, constants, coefficients, and terms used in algebraic expressions. Examples are given of algebraic expressions and whether specific expressions qualify. The document also covers laws of exponents and how exponential notation is used to represent repeated multiplication compactly. Students are assigned advance reading on polynomials and an enrichment activity.

a, b, c, d, m, n, x, y, and z that are used to
represent arbitrary real numbers.

An 8x8 chessboard has 64 squares.
 If the first square on a chessboard contains a grain
then doubled the grain each time you move to
another square, how many grains would be there on
the 64th box?
Repeated multiplication is called
exponentiation.

Mathematicians use a convention notation,
called exponential notation.
2 x 2 x 2 x 2 on the fifth square is written

simply as 24. Using this notation, the

number of grains on the 64th square is 263.
The number of grains on the 64th square

Terms in an Algebraic
Expression
 The parts separated by addition in an
algebraic expression are called its terms.
 For example, the algebraic expression
5x2 – 2y3 + z – 1, which can be written as
5x2 + (– 2y3) + z + (– 1), has 4 terms.
These are 5x2, -2y3, z, and –1.

2.) 3 – a +b – c +d
