4.4 Graphing Using Intercepts

Here are the key points about graphing lines using intercepts: - Find the x-intercept by setting y = 0 and solving for x - Find the y-intercept by setting x = 0 and solving for y - Plot the intercept points on the graph - Draw a straight line through the points So in summary, using intercepts involves: 1) Finding the x- and y-intercepts 2) Plotting those points 3) Connecting them with a straight line This method works well when the coefficients in the equation allow you to easily solve for the intercepts.

TODAY I AM GOING TO SHOW YOU

AN EASIER WAY TO GRAPH LINES

BUT REMEMBER WHEN ALL ELSE

FAILS, YOU CAN ALWAYS SOLVE
FOR Y AND MAKE A T-CHART!!!
What does it mean to INTERCEPT
a pass in football?
The path of the defender crosses the path
of the thrown football.

In algebra, what are x- and y-intercepts?

• The x-intercept of a graph is the point
where the graph crosses the x-axis.
• The y-intercept of a graph is the point
where the graph crosses the y-axis.

Vocabulary – BIG CONCEPT
x-intercept - the coordinate of a point where the
graph crosses the x-axis. (Important – this is when
y = 0)

y-intercept - the
coordinate of a point
where the graph
crosses the y-axis
(when x = 0).
y - intercept

So when is it a good idea to use x
and y intercepts to graph???
• When the two coefficients go into the
constant!!
• 2x + 3y = 6
• -3x – 4y = 24
• 12x + 5y = 60
• 5x – 4y = 40
• Find the x and y-intercepts.
• Plot the x and y-intercepts and draw a line through
them connecting them with a straight edge.
4x + 8y =24

4x + 8(0) = 24 4(0) + 8y = 24

A linear equation in the form _______________ is in
standard form where A, B, and C are integers.
______________,
Example 1:
A. Jackie is in charge of selling tickets for the school jazz concert at
$2.00 for students and $4.00 for adults. She hopes that the
total ticket sales will be about $600 in order to cover expenses
and make a modest profit.
Write a linear equation in standard form to model this situation.

Let x  # student tickets $2.00

y # adult tickets $4.00

2.00 x  4.00 y  600

2 x  4 y  600
Find the x and y intercepts of 4x + 3y = 12
To find the x - intercept:
1. Write the original equation. 4x + 3y = 12
2. 4x + 3(0) = 12 Substitute 0 for y
3. 4x = 12 Solve for x The intercepts are at the points

4. x = 3 Simplify (3, 0) and (0,4)

To find the y - intercept:

1. Write the original equation. 4x + 3y = 12
2. 4(0) + 3y = 12 Substitute 0 for x
3. 3y = 12 Solve for y
4. y = 4 Simplify
