Stability of Floating Bodies

This document discusses the static stability of floating bodies. It explains that a floating body is in equilibrium when the forces of weight and buoyancy are collinear. However, when a body tilts, these forces are no longer collinear and produce a righting or overturning couple. For static stability, the righting couple must be greater than the overturning couple to return the body to its upright position. It provides formulas to calculate the metacentric height and moments based on the body's properties. An example problem is also included to demonstrate calculating these values.

STABILITY OF FLOATING

BODIES

PREPARED BY: ENGR. DEXTER C.

STATICAL STABILITY OF FLOATING
BODIES
A floating body is acted upon by two equal opposing forces. These are, the body’s
weight W (acting at its center of gravity) and its buoyant force BF (acting at the
center of buoyancy Bo that is located at the center of gravity of the displaced
liquid). When these forces are collinear it floats in an upright position.

The two forces, which are no
longer collinear, produces a RM = Wx = W(MG*sin(Θ)
couple equal to W(x). The body M
will not overturn if this couple
makes the body rotate towards
