Core Subject Description

An initiation to the activity and process


of philosophical reflection as a search
for a synoptic vision of life. Topics to be
discussed include the experiences of
embodiment, being in the word with
others and the environment, freedom,
intersubjectivity, sociality, being unto
death.
Course objective:
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
1. Reflect on their daily experience from a holistic point of
view
2. Acquire Critical and Analytical Thinking skills
3. Apply their critical and analytical thinking skills to the
affairs of daily life
4. Become truthful, environment-friendly and service-
oriented

WHAT IS PHILOSOPHY?
The word philosophy is from the two
Greek words, “PHILO” meaning “to love”
and “SOPHIA” meaning “wisdom”.
Philosophy originally meant, “love of
wisdom”.
• Wisdom is the goal of philosophy
• Philosophy is also defined as the
attitude of the mind that by natural light
of reason studies the first causes or the
highest principle of all things
In understanding philosophy there are four
things to be consider
1. Scientific Approach- it uses scientific approach because
the investigation is systematic. It follows certain steps or it
employs certain procedures. In other words, it is an
organized body of knowledge just like any other science.

2. Natural light of reason- philosophy investigates things,


neither by using any laboratory instrument or investigative
tools, nor on the basis of supernatural revelation; otherwise
it becomes theology. Instead, the philosopher uses his
natural capacity to think or observe the world and people.
3. Study of all things- this sets the distinction between
philosophy and other science. All other science concern
themselves with a particular object of investigation. For
example, sociology study of society, botanists focus
their attention to plants, linguists limit themselves to
language, theology investigate God:;whereas, a
philosopher studies human being, society, religion,
language, God and plants, among other concern.
Philosophy is holistic or multidimensional. In short, a
philosopher does not limit himself to a particular object
of inquiry. He question almost anything, if not,
everything.
First cause or the Highest Principle- an idea which means
something is the main and first cause why an event or
situation took place. It is a principle because everything in
the world and every situation has a starting point or a
beginning.
The first principle are:
Principle of identity- whatever is is; whatever is not is not;
everything is what it is. Everything is its own being, and
not being is not being. It means a thing, idea or person
always has a name, a concept, and a characteristics for
that thing to exist.
Principle of Noncontradiction- it is imposible for a
thing to be and not to be at the same time and at
the same respect
Principle of excluding middle- a thing is either is
or is not; everything must be either be or not be;
between being and not being, there is no middle
ground
Principle of sufficient reason- nothing exit without
a sufficient reason for its being and existence

Three friends decided to eat in a restaurant. Each has P10.
They agreed to cheap in their money (amounting to P30)
and chose a menu which they could eat together. After
finishing their meal, they’ve learned that their bill
amounted to P25.

This is what they did with the remaining P5. Each one got P1 back
and they gave the waiter P2 as tip.
Here’s the puzzle. If each of them contributed P10
and got back P1 later it means that each one
actually spent P9. If we multiply P9 by 3 (friends), it
means that they spent P27. Adding the P2 they gave
to the waiter to P27 they spent, makes it P29. If their
money from the start is P30, where is the P1?

Activity 2
Doing philosophy can also be applied in
making laws. Nowadays, the number of minors
involved in criminal acts is rising. There had
been proposals by some legislators that the age
of criminal liability be reduced to 15 years old
as opposed to the usual 18 years old. Make
your arguments regarding this issue. Write your
clear and valid arguments on the space
provided.
