DISTANCE
FORMULA
The distance formula is used to determine the distance, d, between two
points. If the coordinates of the two points are (x1, y1) and (x2, y2), the
distance equals the square root of x2 − x1 squared + y2 − y1 squared.
DISTANCE
FORMULA
DISTANCE
FORMULA
The distance formula is derived by creating a triangle and using the
Pythagorean theorem to find the length of the hypotenuse. The
hypotenuse of the triangle is the distance between the two points.
DISTANCE
FORMULA
EXAMPLE:
Find the distance between P ( 1, 3 ) and Q
( 7, 11 ).
EXAMPLE:
Find the distance between A ( 1, 6 ) and B
(5, -2 ).
EXAMPLE:
Find the distance between M ( -3, 1 ) and J
(0, 5 ).
GROUP
ACTIVITY
Draw a triangle with vertices N ( -1, 4), B
( 0, 1 ) and I ( 2, 5 ), and show that it is
isosceles.
EVALUATION
Find the distance between the two points.
A ( 0, 0 ) and B ( 5, 2 )
C ( 5, 6 ) and D ( -12, 10 )
EVALUATION
Solve the problem below using the distance formula:
The teaching building of a school is mapped on a coordinate grid
with the origin being at library. Math’s building is located at the
point ( 1, 5 ) and the History’s building is located at ( 4, 9 ). How far
is it from Math’s building to History’s building?
