Distance Formula

The document discusses using the distance formula to calculate the distance between points on a Cartesian plane. It provides the formula for distance as the square root of (x2 - x1)2 + (y2 - y1)2, where (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) are the coordinates of the two points. It includes examples of using the formula to find the distance between points with given coordinates, as well as an activity asking students to draw a triangle and show it is isosceles.

DISTANCE
FORMULA
The distance formula is used to determine the distance, d, between two
points. If the coordinates of the two points are (x1, y1) and (x2, y2), the
distance equals the square root of x2 − x1 squared + y2 − y1 squared.

FORMULA
DISTANCE
FORMULA
The distance formula is derived by creating a triangle and using the
Pythagorean theorem to find the length of the hypotenuse. The
hypotenuse of the triangle is the distance between the two points.

The teaching building of a school is mapped on a coordinate grid
with the origin being at library. Math’s building is located at the
point ( 1, 5 ) and the History’s building is located at ( 4, 9 ). How far
is it from Math’s building to History’s building?
