Doing Action
Research: An
Overview
INTRODUCTION

Every teacher is an action researcher. Everyone can do it.

Teachers and students can do it together.

This episode focuses on doing action research as one of the roles of the
teacher.
INTRODUCTION

Every teacher should take interest to know how students learn, wants to
make innovations in the curriculum and desires to improve teaching practice.
In order to achieve these, a teacher has to do action research on the
everyday practical problems. These problematic situations and observed
discrepancies emerge between what is intended and what actually occurs in
the classroom.
EXPLORE
• There is a general agreement among action
research community that action research is about
ACTION: taking action to improve practice and
RESEARCH: finding things out and coming to a new
understanding that create new knowledge.
EXPLORE
o Action Research is not new.
o It dates back to the time of John Dewey in 1920
when he introduced the idea of inquiry. This was
followed by Collier, 1945; Lewin, 1949; Corey,
1953 and many others who came later.
o Schon introduced the notion of action research as a
habit of continuing inquiry.
o Inquiry begins with situations that are problematic,
confusing, uncertain and conflicting, and so does
Action Research.
EXPLORE
o It was Stephen Corey (1953) who defined Action Research as the
process through which practitioners like teachers, study their own
practice to solve their personal or professional practical problems.
o Further on, John Illiot in 1993 clarified that action research is
concerned with everyday practical problems experienced by the
teachers, rather than the theoretical problems defined by pure
researchers.
Action Research is Sometime it is labelled as
grounded on the Teacher Action Research
reality of the school, (TAR) but is popularly known
classroom, teachers simply as Action Research
and students. (AR)

 Action Research is a process that allows teachers to

study their own classrooms, schools and
educational setting in order to understand them
better and to improve their quality and
effectiveness. The processes of observation,
reflection and inquiry led to action that makes a
difference in teaching and learning. It bridges doing
(practice) and learning (study) and reflection
(inquiry).

REFLECT
1. What significant ideas or concepts have you learned about action
research?
• We’ve learned that Action Research is such an important avenue that helps
teachers/future teachers to identify the problem/s that are present in a classroom. It
is a must to observe, question and reflect on the actual current situation to be able to
investigate the concerns in the classroom. It can also be considered as stepping stone
to be an effective teacher, who is concerned about his/her growth or development as
a teacher, and cares for the needs and development of the students.
• Action research enables teachers to formulate interventions or solutions to address a
certain problem being encountered. Through action research, we are being awakened
about the real situation that every classroom is facing.
REFLECT
2. Have you realized that there is a need to be an action researcher as a future
teacher? Yes, or No? If Yes, complete the sentence below.
• Yes. We’ve realized that as future teachers, it is a need to be action researchers
because action research helps us to be aware about the current problems or concerns
that a certain classroom is dealing with. If we’re action researchers, we are able to
investigate a certain issue or problem in a classroom and we will be finding solution
or formulate intervention to address or solve the problem. We are also given a
chance to apply our skills and knowledge on solving some classroom concerns.
Through action researches, we, as future teachers, will be provided knowledge, on
how can we deal with the problems in a classroom. We are also provided opportunity,
on how we can help or contribute in a classroom in order for the problem to be
addressed.
OBSERVE
From what teaching principles of theories can this problem be
anchored?
• We have observed and noticed that action research begins with a problem or a problematic
situation.
Write an example of a problematic situation that you have observed
and noticed.
• In an online class, we have observed that some students are not motivated to participate in class
discussion because of the different factors that students face at home such as poor learning
environment, poor internet connection, lack of gadgets, laziness, unable to focus in class
discussion, lack of support from parents or friends and loss of interest in studies.
• We have noticed that those abovementioned factors contribute to students to be unmotivated to
participate in class discussion during virtual classes. Because of this problem, we should consider
that the online class, as mode of learning is not applicable for all students. With this, we should
find solution to address this problem.
REFLECT
What I have realized? What do I hope to achieve?
• We have realized that as future teachers, it is important to
observe and identify the current problems that are present
in a classroom and we should be mindful on what solutions
or interventions we will formulate in order to address or aid
the problem we encountered.
REFLECT
Write a probable solution to the problematic situation above
• Since the problem was identified, then there should be a probable solution to aid the
problem. Since online class is a new mode of learning, it is expected that it is not applicable
to all students. As future teachers, we should be considerate and mindful about the factors
that makes the students unmotivated. First, we should be kind to our students since some of
them are facing personal issues or issues in the family. We should also motivate them and
make them realize the importance of education in one’s life. Consider the environment that
they are living with. Make them feel that they are belong to a “family”. Give positive
feedbacks to students when they recite during class discussion. Give rewards (for example:
additional points to those who recite) to students especially when they are active in class.
Give motivational quotes or short clips before starting the lesson so it may help them
motivate. Be considerate at all times.
• The probable solutions being mentioned above may not totally eradicate or eliminate the
problem but it can help to address the classroom concern.
PLAN
What strategies, activities, innovations can I employ to
improve the situation or solve the problem?
• As a future action researcher, we can plan for an
appropriate intervention like, conducting survey
about self-evaluation to know the situation of the
students, Virtual consultation to students, and
Webinars about student’s motivation.
