Measures of Variation

This document defines key statistical concepts and formulas used for analyzing data distributions. It discusses measures of central tendency like the mean and measures of variation like variance and standard deviation. It also covers sampling distributions, population versus sample variance, and examples calculating statistics like the mean, variance, and standard deviation for sample data sets.

Types of Inferences
Estimation: We estimate the value of a population parameter.

Testing: We formulate a decision about the value of a population

parameter.
Regression: We make predictions or forecasts about the value of a
population parameter.
Sampling Distribution – a probability distribution which the sample statistic
is a random variable.
Standard Deviation – a quantity calculated to indicate the extent of
deviation for a group as a whole.
