INTRODUCTION
Ladakh is the highest plateau in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Much of it is over 3,000 m
(9,800 ft) above sea level.[9] It spans the Himalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges and the
upper Indus River valley. The Indus is the most important part of Ladakh for its people. Most major
historical and current towns (Shey, Leh, Basgo and Tingmosgang) are located close to the Indus
River. The stretch of the Indus flowing through Ladakh is the only part of this river in India. The
river is sacred in Hindu religion and culture.

West Bengal, state of India, located in the eastern part of the country. It is
bounded to the north by the state of Sikkim and the country of Bhutan, to the
northeast by the state of Assam, to the east by the country of Bangladesh, to the
south by the Bay of Bengal, to the southwest by the state of Odisha, to the west
by the states of Jharkhand and Bihar, and to the northwest by the country of 
Nepal.
