Diagrid System

This document provides an overview of diagrid structural systems. It defines a diagrid system as an exterior structural system without vertical columns, consisting only of diagonal members. It reviews literature confirming diagrid structures have larger lateral stiffness and good seismic performance. The objectives are to understand diagrid structural parameters and differences from conventional systems. Key components of diagrid systems are described as nodes, diagonal members, ring beams, tie beams, and core floor slabs. Examples of existing diagrid buildings are provided. Merits include free floor plans and aesthetics, while demertis include increased construction complexity and cost.

INTRODUCTION
Structural system :
The group of interacting components function as one and safely
transmits the loads uniformly to the ground.

Diagrid structural system :

Diagrid is an exterior structural system where all sturctral elements like
vertical columns are eliminated and consists of only diagonal members
or swapped columns on exterior of building.

LITERATURE REVIEW

• Liu et al.(2018) "A review of the diagrid structural system for tall
buildings."

• Asadi (2017) “Diagrid: An innovative, sustainable, and efficient

structural system.

4
SUMMARY OF LITERATURE REVIEW

• This paper systematically summarizes existing research achievements of the

diagrid structural system for tall buildings and confirms that the structure has
larger lateral stiffness and good seismic performance. Based on the favourable
performance of concrete-filled steel tubes, this paper advises the use of concrete-
filled steel tube columns as the columns in diagrid structural systems for tall
buildings.

5
OBJECTIVE
• To know the structural parameters of diagrid structural system.
• To know the difference between conventional structural system and
diagrid structural system.

6
DIAGRID
COMPONENTS

• Nodes
• Diagonal Members
• Ring beams
• Tie beams
• Core floor slab

10
Structural action of diagrid system

• Effect of loads acting such as

 Gravity loads, shear loads, lateral loads

• Effect of non apex loading

BM and SF are expected in this which is resisted by the horizontal members

CONVENTIAL VS DIAGRID

13
EXAMPLES

IBM Building in
Pittsburgh built in
early 1960s with its 13
storey building height

14
EXAMPLES
iLabs is an IT Park spread
over 5.5 acres overlooking
the stunning Durgam lake.
It is situated in the HITEC
City a major technology
township which is at the
center of the information
technology industry in
Hyderabad.

16
EXAMPLES

SWISS RE TOWER, LONDON GUANGZHOU, CHINA

17
MERITS
• Free, clear and spacious
floor plan
• Aesthetic look provided by
the unique geometric
configuration of system
• Column free exterior and
interior space
• Generous amount of day
lighting

18
DEMERITS

• Engineering and fabrication

joints are more than
conventional orthogonal
structure thus increase in
additional cost
• Errection of nodes is difficult
• Lack of availability of skilled
labours
• As of yet the diagrid construction
techniques are not thoroughly
explored
