Class 1 - Introduction To Ad Hoc and Wireless Sensor Networks

This document provides an overview of an online class on Ad Hoc and Wireless Sensor Networks. It defines key terms like wireless, sensor, and networks. It explains that wireless networks do not require wired connections, sensors are used to collect and measure data, and networks connect two or more devices. The document also distinguishes between infrastructure-based networks like WLANs and cellular networks that rely on fixed base stations, and infrastructure-less ad hoc networks that have no centralized access points. Finally, it outlines some key features of wireless ad hoc networks such as their multi-hop topology, lack of fixed infrastructure, and use in situations where network setup requires no planning.

EC 8702 – Ad Hoc and Wireless

Sensor Networks

Class 1
03.08.2020
Outline
• What do you mean by wireless
• sensor
• networks?
• What is Ad Hoc?

What do you mean by
wireless sensor networks?

• wireless
• No wired connection
• sensor
• Is used to Acquire/Collect data
• Is used to measure the value/quantity
• To detect events or changes
• Networks
• A network consists of
• two or more computers/devices
• that are linked
• in order to share resources (such as printers and CDs),
• exchange files, or allow electronic communications.

• The computers on a network may be linked

• through cables,
• telephone lines,
• radio waves,
• satellites, or
• infrared light beams.
Q. Two very common types of network ?

• Local Area Network (LAN)

• is confined to a relatively small area.
• It is generally limited to a geographic area such as a writing lab,
school, or building.

• Wide Area Network (WAN)

• connect networks in larger geographic areas, such as
Tamilnadu, the India, or the world.
What is Ad Hoc?

• In current American English it is used to describe

something that has been
• formed or used for a special and
• immediate purpose,
• without previous planning.

Wireless Networks
• Two types
• Infrastructure-based

Infrastructure-less
Infrastructure-based
• Relies on fixed infrastructure
• Base Stations or Access points are fixed and centralized
• Eg: WLANs, cellular networks

• Q.Is WLAN and WI-FI the same thing?

Infrastructure-less
• No centralized access points
• Ad Hoc Networks
Comparison between infrastructure networks (cellular network and WLAN) and
wireless ad hoc networks

Dynamic Topology Change in Ad-Hoc Networks

Features of Wireless Ad Hoc Networks
https://classroom.google.com/u/0/c/MTE5Mjk2MTcwMTQ4/sa/MTIxNzUxMTA1NjQ1/details

• Multi-hop network that does not require any fixed

infrastructure
• Peer nodes take part in relaying information
• Self-organizing and self-configuring
• Situations in which useful:
• Need to setup a network fast, e.g., times of emergency, relief
operations
• No access to network infrastructure
• Not much planning can be afforded to setup the network
Depending upon topology and deployment, Ad-Hoc
network may be classified as:

• Homogeneous
• Consist of nodes having similar characteristics
• E.g.: Networked formed of only smartphones

• Heterogeneous
• Consists of nodes with different capabilities
• E.g.: Networked formed of PCs, smart phones and tablets
Key points learnt
• Ad-Hoc network is
• Infrastructure-less network
• No fixed infrastructure – E.g.., Bluetooth, mobile Hotspot etc.,
• Dynamic Topology
• Multi-hopping – no direct source to destination connection
• Receives information from peer nodes/devices
• Used for immediate purpose
• No previous planning
• Used for disaster or relief operations
• Homogeneous and Heterogeneous types are available
