Class 5 - Classifications of Routing Protocols

The document outlines a class on ad hoc and wireless sensor networks. It discusses ad hoc networks, issues in designing routing protocols for ad hoc networks, and classifications of routing protocols. Specifically, it covers table-driven routing protocols like Destination Sequenced Distance Vector (DSDV) and on-demand routing protocols like Ad Hoc On-Demand Distance Vector Routing (AODV). It also categorizes routing protocols based on the routing information update mechanism, use of temporal information, routing topology, and utilization of specific resources.

Routing protocols for ad hoc wireless networks can
be broadly classified into four categories based on

• Based on the Routing Information update Mechanism

• Based on the use of Temporal Information for Routing
• Based on the Routing Topology
• Based on the Utilization of Specific Resources
• Based on the Routing Information update Mechanism
• Proactive or Table-Driven routing protocols
• Reactive or On-Demand routing protocols
• Hybrid routing protocols
• Based on the use of Temporal Information for Routing
• Routing protocols using temporal information
• Routing protocols that use future temporal information
• Based on the Routing Topology
• Flat topology routing protocols
• Hierarchical topology routing protocols
• Based on the Utilization of Specific Resources
• Power-aware routing
• Geographical information assisted routing
• Periodic (proactive) routing protocols
• Similar to most of the current wired network routing
protocols (e.g., OSPF)
• Maintain consistent, up-to-date routing information of
the whole network.
• Table Driven: Destination Sequenced Distance Vector
(DSDV), Wireless Routing Protocol (WRP), Global State
Routing (GSR), Fisheye State Routing (FSR).
• On-demand (reactive) routing protocols
• Source initiated, on demand driven
• Do not maintain all routing information at nodes like the proactive
protocols,
• Routes are created only on demand by the source node
• Route-by-route discovery, maintain until route no longer needed, tear
down route.
• Better in ad hoc networks, as they are resource limited and nodes are
mobile.
• Dynamic Source Routing (DSR), Associativity Based Routing (ABR), Ad-
Hoc On-Demand Distance Vector Routing (AODV), Power Aware Routing
