What is Development?
Development is a
process that creates
growth , progress ,
positive change or the
addition of physical ,
economical ,
environmental , social
and demographic
components
What is Sustainable
Development?
Sustainable development is the organizing principle for meeting
human development goals while simultaneously sustaining the
ability of natural systems to provide the natural resources and
ecosystem services on which the economy and society depend. The
desired result in a state of society where living conditions and
resources are used to continue to meet human needs without
undermining the integrity and stability of the natural system.
Sustainable development can be defined as development that meets
the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs.
For Example.
• Building a new community in a previously undeveloped area without
destroying the ecosystem or harming the environment is an example of
sustainable development.
Why is there a need for
Sustainable Development?
Sustainable development is important as it saves national budget , fulfills
the need of people , conserves natural resources, helps in the coordination
between the natural resources and people and conserve natural resource
for future generation
Example: Groundwater in India
“Recent evidence suggests that the groundwater is under
serious threat of overuse in many parts of the country.
About 300 districts have reported a water level decline of
over 4 meters during the past 20 years. Nearly one-third
of the country is overusing their groundwater reserves. In
another 25years, 60 percent of the country would be
doing the same if the present way of using this resource
continues. Groundwater overuse is particularly found the
agriculturally prosperous regions of Punjab and western
U.P; hard rock plateau areas of central and south India,
some coastal areas and the rapidly growing urban
settlements .
What are the Sustainable Development
Goals?
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),also known as the
Global Goals, were adopted by all United Nations Member States
in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the
planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by
2030.
The 17 SDGs are intergrated – that is , they recognize that action
in one area will affect outcomes in others, and that development
must balance social , economic and environmental sustainability.
Education about Sustainable
Development
Education must be revisited in light of a renewed vision of
sustainable human and social development that is both equitable and
viable. This vision of sustainability must take into consideration the
social, environmental and economic dimensions of human
development and the various ways in which these relate to education:
'An empowering education is one that builds the human resources we
need to be productive, to continue to learn, to solve problems, to be
creative, and to live together and with nature in peace and harmony.
When nations ensure that such an education is accessible to all
throughout their lives, a quiet revolution is set in motion: education
becomes the engine of sustainable development and the key to a
better world.
Three Pillars of Sustainability
Sustainability is most often defined as meeting the
needs of the present without compromising the
ability of future generations to meet their needs. it
has three main pillars ; economic , environmental ,
and social. These three pillars are informally
referred to as people , planet and profits
