Smart Card

Smart cards contain embedded integrated circuits and have the ability to store and process information. They contain memory, a microprocessor, and standard operating systems like JavaCard. Common smart card applications include electronic payments, transportation payments, security access, SIM cards, and student IDs. While smart cards provide secure identification and authentication, they can be damaged if mishandled due to their flexible plastic casing and there are also risks of security being compromised if a user's device has malware. Overall, smart cards are a convenient way to securely store and process user information for various applications.

SMART CARD OIST,BHOPAL

PRESENTED BY- PIYUSH PRASAD PRAVEEN KUMAR

A smart card, chip card, or ICC, is any pocket-sized card with embedded integrated circuits. A smart card or microprocessor cards contain volatile memory and microprocessor components.

In 1977, Michel Ugon invented the first smart card. In 1978, He patented the Self Programmable One-chip Microcomputer that defines the necessary architecture to program the chip. A smart card have two standard dimensions. ID-1 of the ISO/IEC 7810 standard defines cards as nominally 85.60 by 53.98 millimetres. Another popular size is ID-000 which is nominally 25 by 15 millimetres. Both are 0.76 millimetres thick.

Smart cards contain an operating system just like personal computers. Smart cards can store and process information and are fully interactive. JavaCard is a multi-application smart card operating system which provides an API with a set of standard classes through which common java applets can be loaded and executed on the smart card. Smart Card Software in Java -Java Card, EmbeddedJava or J2ME Java provides the features to support i) security using classjava.lang.SecurityManager), ii)cryptographic needs (packagejava.security) MULTOS is a multi-application smart card operating system, that enables a smart card to carry a variety of applications, from chip & pin application for payment to on-card biometric matching for secure ID and ePassport.

Benifits:y

Smart cards can provide identification, authentication, data storage and application processing. A single contact/contactless smart card can be programmed with multiple banking credentials, medical entitlement, drivers license/public transport entitlement, loyalty programs and club memberships to name just a few. Governments gain a significant enhancement to the provision of publicly funded services through the increased security offered by smart cards. Individuals gain increased security and convenience when using smart cards designed for interoperability between services.

Applications of Smart cards

RFID Tags Electronic cash Transportation charge applications Security and access management Cellular phones Set-top boxes Information security All-purpose student ID card

Problems:Problems:y

The plastic card in which the chip is embedded is fairly flexible, and the larger the chip, the higher the probability that normal use could damage it. Cards are often carried in wallets or pocketsa harsh environment for a chip. For large banking systems, failure-management costs can be more than offset by fraud reduction. Client-side identification and authentication cards are the most secure way for e.g., internet banking applications, but security is never 100% sure. If the account holder's computer hosts malware the security model may be broken.

Conclusion:Smart cards can provide a flexible, secure way to authenticate user information, smart cards have become the latest rage in computer and network security.
