Chapter 5

The document discusses research plan and design. It covers exploring what work will be done, why it is important, and what has already been done. The chapter also discusses research design structure and investigation plans, experimental versus non-experimental research, and key elements of experimental design including observations, treatments, groups, and assignment to groups over time. Formal research designs covered include randomized, blocked, Latin square, and factorial designs.

 What do you intend to do?

 Why is the work important?
 What has already been done?
 How are you going to do the work?

Research Design
 Research design is the plan and structure of
investigation so conceived as to obtain answers to
research questions.

Chapter 5
Research Plan

 Exploratory studies tend toward loose structure

with the objective of discovering future research
tasks.
 Formal study begins where the exploration leaves
off;

Steps involved in conducting an experimental study

 a) Identify and define the problem.

 b) Formulate hypotheses and deduce their consequences
 c) Construct an experimental design that represents all the
elements, conditions, and relations of the consequences. To do this,
following are the steps
 Select sample of subjects.

 Group or pair subjects.

 Identify and control non experimental factors.

 Select or construct, and validate instruments to measure outcomes.

 Conduct pilot study.

 Determine place, time, and duration of the experiment

 d) Conduct the experiment.

 e) Compile raw data and reduce to usable form
 f) Apply an appropriate test of significance.
