Grid Map

This document discusses the importance of grid maps for firefighting at airports. It explains that a grid map overlays an area with a grid system of coordinates to identify locations when no landmarks exist. Key areas identified on grid maps include control towers, airport access roads, emergency access roads, rendezvous points, staging areas, fire stations, and water supply locations. Grid maps help determine if an aircraft crash is on or off the airport and identify the most effective emergency response routes. They should be displayed in control towers, fire stations, emergency vehicles, and emergency operation centers.

Contents
• Grid map and its importance in the aerodrome.
• Key points that should be located in the grid
map.
• Places where grid map should be kept.
• AEP, EOC, CT.
• Sample grid map.
• Others.
Objectives
After completion of the session participants will
be able to -
➢Define the grid map of the aerodrome, its
importance and where it should be displayed.
➢ Identify the important areas located in the
grid map.
Grid Map & It’s Importance
A map of an area overlaid with a grid system
of rectangular co-ordinates that are used to
identify ground location where no other
landmarks exist.
A map having vertical and horizontal reference
lines to facilitate locating a specific area or
point. Grid of squares helps the map-reader to
locate a place.
Key location in the grid map
• Control Tower.
• Airport vicinity.
• Emergency access roads.
• Rendezvous point.
• Staging area.
• Fire station.
• Water supply locations.
• Hospital & clinics.
Airport Vicinity
Airport vicinity is the airport surrounding or
nearby region of the airport. It contains nearby
key points and installation such as gates and
fencing, airport access roads, service roads etc.
It used to determine the crash condition is
either On the airport or Off the airport.
Crash Site
Aircraft Crash on Airport
Aircraft crash that has occurred on the airport associated
with take-off and landing, most often on the actual
airfield or approach areas up to 1 kilometer from the
threshold or within the aerodrome perimeter boundary.
Aircraft Crash off Airport
An aircraft accident off airport is declared when an
aircraft accident has occurred outside the airside
perimeter fencing or in area within 8 km radius from the
ARP. Distance will dictate the type of response by the
AFRS.
Emergency Access Roads

• Emergency access roads are the road to reach

the incident place in the quickest possible of
time.
• It should be provided on an aerodrome where
terrain conditions permit their construction, so
as to facilitate achieving minimum response
times. Where a fence is provided, the need for
convenient access to outside areas should be
taken into account.
Staging area
A pre-arranged, strategically placed area
where support response personnel,
vehicles and other equipment can be held
in readiness for use during an emergency.
Rendezvous point
A pre-arranged reference point, i.e. road
junction, cross road or other specified place, to
which personnel / vehicles responding to an
emergency situation initially proceed to
receive directions to staging areas and / or the
accident / incident site.
Aviation Phonetics
Grid Map of HSIA
Places where grid map should be kept

• ATC Tower.
• Fire Station.
• ARFF vehicles.
• EOC (Emergency Operation Center).
• Other emergency responding vehicles.
AEP & Its Objectives
AEP:
Airport Emergency planning is the process of
preparing an airport to cope with an
emergency occurring at the Airport.
Objectives:
To minimize the effects of an emergency,
particularly in respect of saving lives.
Contents of AEP
1. Types of emergency situation.
2. Agencies involved in the plan.
3. Responsibilities and the role of each agency.
4. The Director of EOC and emergency command
post, for each type of emergency.
5. Names and phone numbers of services or people
to alert in the case of emergency.
6. Grid map of the Aerodrome and its immediate
surroundings.
Importance of grid map for Fire Fighters
• Determine the crash condition, either on airport or Off the airport.
• Airports gates and fencing.
• Runway identification and locations.
• Taxiway identification and locations.
• Most effective response routes and alternatives.
• Airport service roads.
• Fuel handling and storage areas.
• Water supply locations.
• Nearby Fire station.
• Nearby hospital and clinics.
