RESTORATION
ERA
RESTORATION ERA
1660-1700
The name 'restoration' comes from the crowning of Charles II, which marks the
restoring of the traditional English monarchical form of government following a
short period of rule by a handful of republican governments.

During the Restoration period there was a rapid development of science.

Literature, art, music and scholarly pursuit have increased
immensely as an unaccustomed peace and prosperity on the land

Growth of science and the likes are exponentially increasing

as the publication was much more convenient because the

RELIGIOUS AND
POLITICAL
CONFLICT
In the Restoration period we see the rise
of two political parties. They were the
Whigs and the Tories. The Whigs were
opposing and the Tories were supporting
the king. The rise of these parties gave
fresh importance to men of literary ability.
The religious controversy was also going
on. It was very bitter. The Protestants and
the Catholics were face to face.
THE REVOLUTION
THE REVOLUTION
Charles’ brother James II ascended the throne in 1685. He
tried to establish Catholicism in the country. He became
unpopular very soon. The entire nation rose against him. He
lost his seat due to the bloodless revolution of 1688. The
Restoration, the controversies, and the revolution of 1688
deeply influenced the literature of the age.
CHARACTERISTICS
1. Rise of Neo-classicism
The literature in this era reflected the etiquette rules, social
habits, and self-expression.

2. Imitation of the Ancient Masters

Literary works of the restoration age are the development
of the neo-classical.

3. Imitation of the French Masters

The French influence to English writers is seen in the
coarseness and indecency of the restoration comedy of
manners.
4. CORRECTNESS AND APPROPRIATENESS
In the restoration period, the work was imitative and
limited in quality. Dryden was the first representative of
the new ideas that dominate English literature till the
end of the 18th century.

5. REALISM AND FORMALISM

Restoration literature is realistic. The Restoration
writers eschewed all extravagances of thought and
language and aimed at achieving directness and
simplicity of expression.
