Correct Information
Describe the calming of the
storm
Explain how the Calming of the storm
might help Christians facing
persecution?
3. RELIABILITY OF MARK AS AN AUTHOR
Possibly the Mark whose mother had a house in Jerusalem, where the disciples
would meet, and had Jesus had his Last Supper and who was the young man that
ran away naked in the Garden of Gethsemane when Jesus was arrested. So he has
SOME personal experience (but not much)

Possibly the same Mark who was Peter’s interpreter, translating from Peter’s
Aramaic to Greek, while travelling with Peter as a missionary. So he has A LOT of
knowledge of what Peter himself witnessed and saw Jesus do and say.

Is Mark a common name, and he is just a different Mark who is living in Rome and
did not know Jesus or the disciples, or Israel, except from hearsay ?
But Mark uses Aramaic phrases in his gospel and translates them – suggesting he
was brought up in Israel, speaking Aramaic, and his gospel is based on the original
Aramaic stories.

Mark explains Jewish customs to his Roman readers, suggesting he is Jewish, and
knows what Jewish life in Israel was like, so gives us reliable understanding.
BUT Mark’s translation from Aramaic to Greek is sometimes clumsy and childlike–
so he could have given the wrong impression by mistranslating?
Explain the importance and
authority of Mark’s Gospel for
Christians today.
Jesus’ Ministry
What does the voice from
heaven say at the Baptism?
Retell the Baptism of
Jesus.
What is the symbolism of Jesus’ baptism?
Importance to Jesus:
Confirms his identity as Son of God – his
unique authority to do & teach what he
will
Confirms his identify as the Messiah,
anointed by Holy Spirit for a special
mission: to “save” the people
Confirms he must be a humble, suffering
Servant (“with you I am well pleased”
Isaiah)
Importance to Christians:
Jesus’ baptism encourages persecuted
Christians because it shows that Jesus
really is the Son of God & that he is divine
( “you are my Son”). Also, because God
himself approves of him “with you I am
well pleased” . The Holy Spirit descends
on him shows he can be trusted as doing &
teaching God’s truth.
Importance of Temptations to Jesus:
Confirms he is Son of God – he has proved
that he can triumph over all the devil’s
temptations – no human could.
Confirms he has authority over evil – he
can “cast out” evil wherever he goes
Confirms he can start his mission –
unaffected by the devil’s temptation, he
will do God’s will, fully and perfectly.
Importance of Temptations to
Christians:
Reassures Christians of who Jesus is - his
unique status as the Son of God, capable
of defeating evil
Example to Christians – especially in
Lent: Christians also fast and pray, to
reject evil and sin in their own lives, and
so be true to God.
The Baptism and Temptation of Jesus 1:9-13
Not long afterward _____ came from ________ in
the province of ________, and was baptized by ____
in the ______. As soon as Jesus came up out of the
water, he saw ______ opening and the ______
coming down on him like a ____. And a voice came
from heaven, "___ are my own dear ___. I am
_______ with ___." 12 At once the _______ made
him go into the ______, 13 where he stayed ______
days, being _______ by _____. Wild animals were
there also, but _______ came and helped him.
Explain why the incident at
Caesarea Philippi is an important
event in Mark’s Gospel?
Write down only which of the following statements are true
about the story:
1] Jesus was with his disciples near Caesarea Philippi.
2] Jesus asked them if people thought he was the Messiah.
3] The disciples answered ‘most people think you are a wise
leader’.
4] The disciples answered ‘Some say you are John the Baptist’.
5] ‘Others say you are Moses’.
6] ‘Others say that you are Elijah, while others say that you are
one of the prophets’.
7] Jesus asked them ‘Who do you say I am?’
8] John answered ‘You are the Messiah’.
9] Peter answered ‘You are the Messiah’.
10] Jesus told them ‘Do not tell anyone about me’.
Then Jesus began to teach his disciples: "The
___ of ___ must ______ much and be
________ by the ______, the _____ _______,
and the ________ of the ___. He will be put
to _____, but _____ days later he will ____ to
____." He made this very clear to them. So
_____ took him aside and began to ______
him. But _____ turned around, looked at his
disciples, and _______ _____. "Get away
from me, _____," he said. "Your thoughts
don't come from ___ but from _____
nature!"
Importance for Disciples
This event is also a watershed, or turning point for the
disciples.

The disciples must also be willing to suffer rejection

and persecution. To follow the way of the Cross. Taking
the easy way out, is to “think like Satan”. They are
clearly told that suffering is part of God’s purpose,
something they do not want to accept.

Discipleship is demanding and difficult. On the

journey, Jesus rebukes their desires for “glory” and
their lack of courage several times. They sometimes
wonder what they will get for all this.

Persecuted Christians & Christians suffering today see

their suffering in the light of Jesus’ example: like him,
they are fulfilling God’s purpose by their suffering, even
if they can’t understand it.
What does the voice from heaven
say at the Transfiguration?
The Transfiguration 9:2-8

Six days later _____ took with him _____, _____, and ____,
and led them up a high ________, where they were alone.
As they looked on, a ______ came over Jesus, and his
_______ became _______ ______—whiter than anyone in
the world could ____ them. Then the three disciples saw
______ and _____ talking with _____. _____ spoke up and
said to ______, "_______, how good it is that we are here!
We will make _____ _____, one for you, one for Moses,
and one for Elijah." He and the others were so __________
that he did not know what to say. Then a _____ appeared
and _______ them with its ______, and a _____ came from
the cloud, "____ is my own dear ___—______ to him!"
They took a quick look around but did not see anyone else;
only Jesus was with them.
Symbolism of the Story
Transfiguration to dazzling white – Jesus is more than human. Here, he lets his glory be
seen, lit up by a divine light, showing him to be the divine Son of God.
God’s voice: same words as at the baptism - confirms Jesus is God’s Son, doing His will.
Says disciples should “listen to Jesus” (rather than the 2 prophets either side of him)
The cloud: indicates God’s presence, while also sheltering people from God’s awesome
presence.
Moses: represents the Law, by which Jews lived. Considered greatest of all prophets.
Elijah: represents all the prophets. Jews believed Elijah would reappear to prepare them
for the Messiah (at Passover, they leave out a plate and cup for him, in case he should
return)
Appearance of both Moses and Elijah confirms Jesus is the fulfilment of the Old
Testament, that they agree with his plan to suffer, and that he completely fufills God’s will,
in law and as prophet. Both suffered in their lives, and were believed to have survive
death.
The shelters: at Sukkoth, Jews build shelters to remind them of their wandering in the
wilderness when they left Egypt, surrounded by God’s loving care and closeness – Jewish
phrase “to live with His people” = “to live in a tent”. Maybe this is what Peter feels & is
doing, to keep this fantastic experience of God’s closeness.
Jesus’ warning; part of the Messianic secret. People must not think he is all about glory –
he must suffer and die first.
Importance of Transfiguration for Disciples & Christians

Seeing Jesus in glory, and hearing the voice, confirmed for

the disciples that Jesus really is the Son of God and that
they are right to listen to him
It helps them accept Jesus’ teaching on the Way of the
Cross, as being the right way to go (they really struggle with
this idea) If Jesus has such glory as the Son of God, then
they need not be afraid of any suffering they will see him go
through.

They can hope to be in such glory for themselves, if they

follow him as his disciples. This will reassure persecuted
Christians going through suffering now.

Suffering, Death and
Resurrection
Summary of Entry into Jerusalem
- asked disciples to find & untie a colt, if they are challenged
they are to say “master needs it and will return it”. Disciples
find everything as Jesus said. Put cloaks on colt for Jesus to
sit on.
- People spread branches & their cloaks on road in front of
him and shouted “Praise be to the coming Kingdom of our
father David”. Jesus enters Jerusalem.
Entry to Jerusalem 11:1-11
As they approached _________, near the towns of _________ and _______, they
came to the _______ of ______. _____ sent ___ of his ________ on ahead with these
________: "Go to the ______ there ____ of you. As soon as you get there, you will
find a ___ tied up that has never been ______. _____ it and bring it here. And if

send it back at once." So they went and found a _____ out in the street, tied to the
door of a house. As they were untying it, some of the ________ asked them, "What
are you doing, untying that colt?" They answered just as Jesus had told them, and the
crowd let them go. They brought the colt to Jesus, threw their ______ over the
animal, and Jesus got on. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others
cut ________ in the field and spread them on the road. The people who were in front
and those who followed behind began to shout, "________ God! ____ bless him who
comes in the name of the Lord! God bless the coming ________ of King _____, our
______! ______ be to ____!" Jesus entered _________, went into the ______, and
looked around at everything. But since it was already late in the day, he went out to
Bethany with the twelve disciples.

Understanding the Entry into Jerusalem
- Jesus fulfilling OT prophecy that “your King will come
to you humble, riding on a donkey”
- Jesus shows he is not trying to be a military warrior –
he is on donkey not horse, no weapons
- crowd recognises Jesus as their Saviour, Jesus aaccepts
their praise.
-King David was Israel’s best King that made the nation
strong and united – the crowd may think Jesus will save
them from Romans
Summary of the Anointing at Bethany
- Jesus at friends’ house in Bethany when woman of bad reputation
comes in and pours jar expensive oil on his head, that cost more than a
year’s wages. Some of those present say “What a waste this money
could have been sold given to the poor”. Jesus replies “Leave her alone.
She has done a beautiful thing that will always be remembered. You
have the poor with you always, but you will not always have me. She
has anointed my body for its burial.
The Anointing at Bethany
It was now two days before the Festival of ________ and __________ Bread. The
______ priests and the _________ of the ___ were looking for a way to ________
Jesus secretly and put him to _____. “We must not do it during the festival,” they
said, “or the people might ____.” Jesus was in ________ at the house of ______, a
man who had suffered from a dreaded ____ disease. While Jesus was eating, a
______ came in with an __________ jar full of a very expensive _________ made of
pure _____. She broke the jar and ________ the _________ on Jesus' _____. Some
of the people there became _____ and said to one another, “What was the use of
_________ the perfume? It could have been ____ for more than ______ hundred
silver coins and the money given to the ____!” And they criticized her harshly. But
Jesus said, “Leave her alone! Why are you bothering her? She has done a fine and
__________ thing for me. You will _______ have ____ people with you, and ___
time you want to, you can ___ them. But you will not always have __. She did what
she could; she poured perfume on my ____ to _______ it ahead of time for
_______. Now, I assure you that wherever the ______ is preached all over the
_____, what she has done will be told in _______ of her.” Then _____ ________,
one of the twelve disciples, went off to the _____ priests in order to ______Jesus to
them. They were pleased to hear what he said, and promised to give him ____ . So
Judas started looking for a good chance to hand Jesus over to them.
Understanding the Anointing at Bethany
- it is important to remember the poor but God must also be
honoured. Jesus praised her for the love she showed, & said “it would
be remembered”
- the woman was speaking like a prophet, showing that Jesus would
soon be dead.
- anointing Jesus with oil showed that she believed he was the
Messiah and King of Israel- Kings and prophets were anointed with oil
in OT
Summary of the Last Supper
Jesus told 2 of his disciples “Go into the city , you will see a man carrying a
water jar. Follow him and enter the house he goes into. Ask the owner “The
Master says, where is the room where I am to eat the Passover with my
disciples?”. The disciples did this. That evening, at Supper 3 things:

1 . Jesus predicts his betrayal: one of you will betray me. They all asked
“Surely not I Lord?” Jesus replied, it is one of the twelve, the one who dips his
bread in the dish with me. Better for that man if he had never been born.”

2. Institution of the Eucharist: Jesus takes bread, gives thanks for it, breaks it,
and hands it to his disciples saying: “Take this and eat, this is my body, given
for you. Do this in memory of Me. “. He took the cup, gave thanks, handed it to
his disciples saying “Take this and drink of it. This is my blood of the New
Covenant, poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory
of Me.”

3. Jesus predicts his final victory: “I tell you I will not again drink the fruit of
the vine, until I drink it in the Kingdom of God”
The Last Supper
On the ______ day of the Festival of ____________ Bread, the day the ______ for the
________ meal were killed, Jesus' disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and
get the Passover meal ready for you?” Then Jesus sent ___ of them with these
instructions: “Go into the city, and a ___ carrying a jar of ______ will meet you. Follow
him to the house he enters, and say to the owner of the house: ‘The _______ says,
Where is the room where my _________ and I will eat the ________ meal?’ Then he will
show you a large upstairs room, prepared and furnished, where you will get everything
ready for us.” The disciples left, went to the city, and found everything just as Jesus had
told them; and they prepared the Passover meal. When it was evening, Jesus came with
the twelve disciples. While they were at the table eating, Jesus said, “I tell you that ___
of you will _______ me — one who is _______ with me.” The disciples were ______
and began to ask him, one after the other, “Surely you don't mean __, do you?” Jesus
answered, “It will be one of you ________, ___ who dips his ______ in the ____ with __.
The ___ of ___ will die as the __________ say he will; but how terrible for that man who
betrays the Son of Man! It would have been better for that man if he had ____ _____!”
While they were eating, Jesus took a piece of ____, gave a prayer of _______, ______ it,
and gave it to his disciples. “____ it,” he said, “this is __ ____.” Then he took a ___, gave
______ to ___, and handed it to them; and they all drank from it. Jesus said, “This is my
____ which is _______ out for ____, my _____ which ______ ____ ________. I tell
you, I will ______ again _____ this _____ until the day I drink the ____ _____ in the
________ of ___.” Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.

Understanding the Last Supper
- Jesus emphasises that Judas’ sin of betrayal is his
own free will. He tries to put him off doing this sin.
But Jesus accepts what will happen to him.
- Jesus’ body and blood are the new sacrifice that
will bring in a new covenant – a new relationship
between God and man. Jesus’ sacrifice will forgive
our sins so we can never be cut off from God. Jesus
gives his body and blood as spiritual food to us, to
remain strong spiritually. He wants us to do this to
remember him by.
- Jesus predicts his final victory and rejoicing in the
Feast of the Kingdom of God (The Messianic
Banquet) Was it really Passover?
Passover - remembering when the angel of death killed the
firstborn of Egypt but spared the Jewish firstborn. That is
when Pharaoh let them go from slavery. So it is a feast of
FREEDOM.
For: Jesus and his disciples are still celebrating a festival of
freedom in traditional Jewish way, with Jewish food. They
remember the story of Moses freeing the Jews from slavery.
Against: Jesus’ sacrifice will not free the Jews from slavery,
but everyone who eats his body from sin and death, in a new
kind of Passover. Jesus gives a new meaning to the bread and
the wine as being his body and blood – spiritual food.
Summary of Agony in Garden of Gethsemane

-takes 3 disciples with him, tells them to stay awake. Goes off
to pray. Throws himself on ground, overwhelmed with sorrow
and deeply troubled. Three times comes back to find them
sleeping.” The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. Stay awake
& watch with me”. Goes back to pray saying “Father take this
cup away from me. But not what I want, but what you want be
done”. Third time sees disciples sleeping, says “You can take
your rest now. My betrayer is close at hand”.
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

able to stay _____ even for ___ hour?” And he said to them, “Keep ______, and _____ that you will not
____ into _____________. The ________ is ________, but the _____ is _____.” He went away once

Look, here is the man who is _______ me!” Jesus was still speaking when ______, one of the twelve

But ___ of those standing there drew his ______ and struck at the _____ Priest's slave, cutting off his

arrest me. But the __________ must come true.” Then ___ the __________ ____ him and ___ away. A
certain young ___, dressed only in a ______ cloth, was following Jesus. They tried to arrest him, but he
___ away _____, leaving the cloth behind.
Understanding Agony in Garden

Shows Jesus’ humanity – he is weak and

afraid. Shows God’s power in prayer –
Jesus becomes calm, takes courage and
takes control of the situation. Unlike the
disciples who were sleeping, and are
unprepared for the arrest – and lash out
with violence.
Jesus’ arrest

The Jewish soldiers arrive with Judas to arrest Jesus. Judas

arranges to kiss Jesus to show the soldiers who Jesus is. Jesus
says “Judas, do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” As
soldiers seize Jesus, one of disciples cuts off servant of High
Priest’s ear off. Jesus says to soldiers “Am I leading a rebellion,
that you come to be with sticks and clubs?” A young man was
there, when soldiers tried to seize him, he ran off naked.

Significance
Jesus makes it clear he does not want a violent rebellion. He is
peaceful, and does not want violence.
Summary of Jesus’ Trial before Sanhedrin (Jewish Council) - & why it was
unfair

-Jesus taken to High Priests house (not the proper Court of Law), in the
middle of the night. Not all the Sanhedrin are present. There are no clear
charges against Jesus, witnesses all accuse him of different things
(wanting to tear down Temple, cure sick by the power of the devil,
blasphemy against God). Jesus is not presumed innocent. The High Priest
asks accusing questions of Jesus. “Are you the Son of the Most Blessed
one, the Messiah?” Jesus replies “I am. And you will see the Son of Man
seated at the right hand of the Power, coming on the clouds of heaven” .
The Trial before the High Priest 14:53-65
Then Jesus was taken to the ____ ________ _____, where all the _____ _______, the
______, and the ________ of the ___ were gathering. _____ followed from a
________ and went into the _________ of the High Priest's house. There he sat down
with the guards, keeping himself warm by the fire. The chief priests and the whole
_______ tried to find some ________ against Jesus in order to put him to _____, but
they _____ ___ find any. Many _________ told ____ against Jesus, but their _______
did ___ agree. Then some men stood up and told this lie against Jesus: "We heard
him say, "I will ___ down this ______ which ___ have made, and after _____ days I
will _____ one that is ___ ____ by ___.' " Not even they, however, could make their
stories agree. The ____ ______ stood up in front of them all and questioned Jesus,
"Have you no ______ to the _______________ they bring against you?" But _____
kept _____ and would not ___ a ____. Again the High Priest questioned him, "Are you
the ________, the ___ of the _______ ___?" "_ __," answered Jesus, "and you will all
see the ___ of ___ seated at the ______ side of the _________ and coming with the
______ of _______!" The ____ Priest ____ his _____ and said, "We don't need any
more witnesses! You heard his _________. What is your decision?" They all voted
against him: he was _______ and should be put to _____. Some of them began to
spit on Jesus, and they ___________ him and hit him. "_____ who hit you!" they said.
And the guards took him and ________ him.
Is Jesus guilty of blasphemy?

NO - Jesus refers to himself as “Son of Man”, not Son of God.

He does not refer to God directly but says “The Power”.
Witnesses cannot agree on whether he did say he wanted to
destroy the Temple. He is not saying he IS “the Power”.
YES – Jesus answers “I am” when asked if he is the Son of
God. “I AM” is the name God called himself to Moses. Jesus
says he has equal status with God, to be seated at his right,
and God’s authority to judge the world at the end of time.
Summary of Trial before Pontius Pilate

Jews take Jesus to Pilate with the charge that Jesus claims to be “King of
the Jews” (they know Pilate won’t be interested in religious arguments
eg if Jesus is Son of God. But Pilate will be concerned if someone is
claiming to be a King, as this challenges Roman rule – it is treason to the
Emperor.

- Pilate asks “Are you King of the Jews?” Jesus replies, “It is you who
say so”. The Jews make many more accusations against Jesus. Pilate
says “Don’t you hear all these accusations they are making against
you?” But Jesus stayed silent and Pilate was amazed.

Who was Pontius Pilate?

The Roman Governor of the South of Israel, including

Jerusalem. Directly responsible to the Emperor – so any
trouble his career/ life is in danger. Not afraid to use force &
put down rebellions, but sensitive to Jewish customs and
tries to co-operate with them, so everyone is happy &
peaceful rule
Pilate gives crowd the choice

Pilate knows about a Jewish custom to release

one prisoner at Passover. He brings out Barabbas,
a robber. The crowd choose Barabbas not Jesus.
Pilate asks “What shall I do with Jesus of
Nazareth?” The crowd shouts – crucify him.
Explain why the trials of Jesus can be
said to be unfair.
Summary of Mocking & Jesus’ Crucifixion
- Pilate hands Jesus over to be flogged (whipped) and then crucified. After Jesus
whipped, soldiers mock Jesus. They put purple robe on him, crown of thorns,
bow down to him saying “Hail King of the Jews!”. They beat him with sticks and
spit at him. Then take him out to crucify him.

- Soldiers get Simon of Cyrene to carry Jesus’ cross as Jesus too weak. Crucify
him between two thieves on Golgotha (Place of the Skull). 9am.

- passers-by insult Jesus “You who were going to destroy the Temple, come
down from the cross!”. The Jewish priests said “He saved others but he
cannot save himself. Let this Messiah, this King of Israel come down from the
cross and we will believe him”.

- at 3pm darkness over whole land. Jesus cried out “My God My God why have
you forsaken Me?”. Someone thought he was calling for Elijah, ran up to him with
sponge soaked in cheap wine “Let us see if Elijah will come and rescue him”.
With a loud cry, Jesus breathed out his last. Curtain in temple torn in two. Roman
centurion said “Surely this man was a Son of God”. Women disciples standing by
saw how he died.

___________, _____ the _______ of the younger _____ and of _______, and _______. They had
followed Jesus while he was in Galilee and had helped him. Many other women who had come to
Jerusalem with him were there also.
Who was to blame for Jesus’ death?
- Judas – he betrayed him and got him arrested, otherwise the
Jews would not dare as Jesus so popular.

- the Jews – they wanted to get rid of Jesus for a long time, jealous
of Jesus’ teaching authority, miracles, supporters. They set up an
unfair trial, rushed it through, planned accusation of “King of
Jews” to make Jesus crucified by Pilate. They rigged the crowd to
vote for Barabbas.

- Pilate – knew Jesus innocent, but worried for his own career if
trouble starts between Jesus’ disciples and other Jews; wants to
co-operate with the Jews as they also run the country.

- Jesus: does not defend himself. Challenges Jewish and Roman

authority by entering Jerusalem like a King, and incident in the
temple
What does Jesus’ Death mean for Christians Today?
- shows how much human hate and sin there is, as people willing to kill the
Son of God
- shows what Jesus was willing to do, so we could have sins forgiven:
- shows God’s love in giving up his Son for us
- shows Jesus defeated temptation & evil, he was willing to suffer and die for
what was right & not give up
- shows that the barrier of sin between God and man was broken (Veil torn in
Temple)

Significance of Jesus’ Resurrection for
Christians Today
- shows that death is not the end
- shows Jesus defeated evil and death by rising
again. Shows God’s power
- shows what Jesus said about himself was true:
he is the divine Son of God with eternal life
- shows the rest of Jesus’ teaching can also be
trusted, as God proved him right by raising him
from the dead
- shows Jesus is alive in God, Christian worship
a living being
Is the original Mark’s ending a good ending?
YES appropriate to end with amazement and fear at such a
miracle. Leaves the reader to reflect themselves on what
happened. Message that Jesus is risen already given by
angel. The future is left open.

NO – Gospel is meant to be good news but this ends with

fear and confusion. Not a good example to persecuted
Christians to end on fear. No clear explanation of what
“Jesus is risen” means. Mark might have died himself in
persecutions, or end of scroll torn

clear to them. So _____ took him aside and began to ______ him. But _____
turned around, looked at his disciples, and _______ _____. "Get away from
me, _____," he said. "Your thoughts don't come from ___ but from _____
nature!"

Teacher
Jesus’ ministry was all about teaching.

Even the miracles were meant to teach people something
 About who Jesus is: Son of God with authority over nature, sin and death
 To teach us about God’s love and care for us

Everyone called Jesus teacher – the disciples, the Pharisees, ordinary Jews.
 Calming of the Storm: “Teacher, do you not care that we are going
down?”

 Transfiguration: Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let
us make three tents

 Rich Young Man: “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

 Paying Taxes to Caesar : Pharisees asked “Teacher..is it lawful to pay taxes
to Caesar, or not?
Messiah

The Jews expected a Messiah to come and save them from the Romans and make
them a great nation again. But Jesus was going to be a different kind of Messiah.

Messiah = Christ (in Greek) It means “the Anointed One”.
In ancient Israel, Kings were “anointed”.

Calling Jesus the Messiah/ Christ (“Anointed One”) was saying he was an anointed
king.

Jesus was “anointed” by the Holy Spirit at his baptism, but not as a national king -
He is King of Heaven.

Who called Jesus “Messiah”?
 Mark himself” The beginning of the Good News of Jesus Christ”

 At Caes. Philippi: Jesus asks “who do you say that I am?” Peter answers ‘You
are the Christ”

 The High Priest at his trial in the Sanhedrin: “Are you the Christ, the Son of the
Blessed One”?

Son of Man
2 meanings to this title:
1. An ordinary man, the son of a man. Any body. “I”.

2. The Messiah of God. The “Son of Man” is described in the Book of Daniel as coming on the
clouds of heaven to judge the world in God’s name. Fulfilling the role of a Messiah. This
meaning of Son of Man is dangerous – it is claiming to be God’s chosen one.

When did Jesus use this title?
1. In its meaning of “ordinary man”.
 eg Ceas.Philippi “and he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things”
 eg At Last Supper “Woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed”

2. In its meaning as Messiah, from Daniel,
 eg Paralysed Man “so you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive
sins, I tell you..”
 eg “the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath” – having authority over the Jewish Law. Only
God’s own Messiah could do this.
 Eg at his trial before the Sanhedrin, when asked if he was “Son of the Blessed One” Jesus
answered – “you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with
the clouds of heaven”. A direct quote from the book of Daniel and a clear claim to being the
Messiah.
Son of David
A political title.
Dangerous, because it is challenging Roman authority.

Who was David?
David” was the greatest of Israel’s past kings, who made the nation strong and free.

Who called Jesus “Son of David”?
1. Blind Bartimaus: “Son of David, have pity on me!”
Jesus did not stop him shouting this out.

2. The crowd on Palm Sunday: shouted “Hosanna to the coming rule of our Father
David! “Jesus accepted the crowd’s cries.

Did Jesus see himself as the Son of David?
 He did not silence Bartimaeus or the crowd
 The way Jesus entered Jerusalem, on a donkey- on purpose, similar to the way
Kings would enter Jerusalem in triumph. Jesus is their savior - like King David- but
humble, not worldly king, not saving from the Romans but from sin.
Son of God
2 meanings to this title.
1. A faithful Jew, part of the chosen race of the “sons of God”.

2. the Unique Son of God, sharing in God’s divinity. Claiming to be like God.

When did Jesus use this title?
Jesus NEVER used the title himself.

 The unclean spirits that Jesus cast out of people called him ”Son of God”. He always
told them to be quiet.

 Before the Sanhedrin at his trial: Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?
Jesus answered “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of
the power, and coming in the clouds of heaven”

 The Roman Centurion at Jesus crucifixion “Truly, this man was the Son of God”.
Maybe he just meant it in the sense of faithful Jews, but maybe he meant more.

Even though Jesus changes the priest’s title & refers to himself as Son of Man, he is
saying he is equal to God, sitting alongside him in heaven.
