This document provides an overview of functions and their graphical representations. It discusses using graphs to show the relationship between two quantities, with the independent variable on the x-axis and dependent variable on the y-axis. Examples show representing patterns algebraically and graphing linear and nonlinear functions. The document also covers writing function rules to represent real-world situations and determining whether a relation is a function.

CHAPTER 4: AN
INTRODUCTION TO FUNCTIONS TEACHER MARIA AMANDA ARGUELLO ALGEBRA 1 COMMON CORE USING GRAPHS TO RELATE TWO QUANTITIES OBJECTIVES:
• TO REPRESENT MATHEMATICAL RELATIONSHIPS USING GRAPHS
PROBLEM 1: ANALYZING A GRAPH Essential understanding: You can analyze the relationship in a graph by reading the titles. The axis tells you what variables are related. The graph itself represents the relationship as the variables change GOT IT: WHAT ARE THE VARIABLES IN EACH GRAPH? DESCRIBE HOW THE VARIABLES ARE RELATED AT VARIOUS POINTS ON THE GRAPH. TABLES AND GRAPHS CAN BOTH SHOW A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VARIABLES. DATA FROM A TABLE ARE OFTEN VISUALLY DISPLAYED IN A GRAPH. GOT IT 2 WHEN ONE QUANTITY DEPENDS ON ANOTHER, SHOW THE INDEPENDENT QUANTITY ON THE HORIZONTAL AXIS AND THE DEPENDENT QUANTITY ON THE VERTICAL AXIS PROBLEM 3.1: • When Malcom jogs on the treadmill, he gradually increases his speed until he reaches a certain level. Then he jogs at this level for several minutes. Then he slows to a stop and stretches after this he increases to a speed slightly lower than before and jogs at this speed for a short while before slowing to a stop again. What is the possible sketch of a graph that shows Malcom’s jogging speed during his workout? Label each section. GOT IT 3 LESSON PRACTICE 4.2: PATTERNS AND LINEAR FUNCTIONS • OBJECTIVE: TO IDENTIFY AND REPRESENT PATTERNS THAT DESCRIBE LINEAR FUNCTIONS VOCABULARY
• Dependent variable: a variable whose value depends on the value of another
value; it changes in response to another variable • Independent variable: value that causes a change on another variable; but is independent of it. • Inputs: Values of the independent variable (x-domain) • Outputs: values of the dependent variable (y-range) PROBLEM 1: GOT IT: YOUR TURN NOW! ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDING PROBLEM 2: GOT IT 2: LESSON CHECK 4.3: PATTERNS AND NONLINEAR FUNCTIONS OBJECTIVES:
• TO IDENTIFY AND REPRESENT PATTERNS THAT DESCRIBE NONLINEAR FUNCTIONS
A NON-LINEAR FUNCTION, AS THE NAME IMPLIES, IS A FUNCTION WHOSE GRAPH IS NOT A LINE OR PART OF A LINE. PROBLEM 1: GOT IT 1: PROBLEM 2: 4.4: GRAPHING A FUNCTION RULE OBJECTIVE:
• TO GRAPH EQUATIONS THAT REPRESENT FUNCTIONS
THE SET OF ALL SOLUTIONS OF AN EQUATION FORMS THE EQUATION’S GRAPH. A GRAPH MAY INCLUDE SOLUTIONS THAT DO NOT APPEAR IN A TABLE. A REAL WORLD GRAPH SHOULD ONLY SHOW POINTS THAT MAKE SENSE IN A GIVEN SITUATION. PROBLEM 2: PROBLEM 4.A PROBLEM 4.B GOT IT 3: LESSON CHECK 4.5: WRITING A FUNCTION RULE OBJECTIVE:
• TO WRITE EQUATIONS THAT REPRESENT FUNCTIONS
ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDING: MANY REAL-WORLD FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS CAN BE REPRESENTED BY EQUATIONS. YOU CAN USE AN EQUATION TO FIND THE SOLUTION OF A GIVEN REAL-WORLD PROBLEM. AN ARCHERY CLUB CHARGES AN ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP FEE OF $65 PLUS $2 PER VISIT. WRITE THE FUNCTION RULE FOR THE TOTAL COST OF BELONGING TO THE CLUB IF YOU MAKE V VISITS IN A YEAR. HOW MUCH WOULD IT COST IF YOU USE THE CLUB 15 TIMES IN A YEAR? 4.6: FORMALIZING RELATIONS AND FUNCTIONS OBJECTIVES:
• TO DETERMINE WHETHER A RELATION IS A FUNCTION
• TO FIND DOMAIN AND RANGE AND USE FUNCTION NOTATION
4.7: ARITHMETIC SEQUENCES OBJECTIVES:
• TO IDENTIFY AND EXTEND PATTERNS IN SEQUENCES
• TO REPRESENT ARITHMETIC SEQUENCES USING FUNCTION NOTATION
