IA in Maths AI

What’s an IA in Maths AI?

• Internal assessment (IA)
• 20 % of your final grade
• “The exploration should be approximately 12-20 pages long with double line spacing,
including diagrams and graphs, but excluding the bibliography. However, it is the quality
of the mathematical writing that is important, not the length.” from the Math AISL guide
• Internally assessed, externally moderated
• IA in Mathematics AI is an individual exploration. This is a piece of written work that
involves investigation an area of mathematics.
• 20 marks. Assessed according to five criterias.
• an  integral  part  of  the  course  and  is
compulsory  for  all  students…
Why an IA?
• It  enables  students  to   demonstrate  the
application  of  their  skills  and  knowledge,  and
to  pursue  their  personal  interests,  without  the   time  limitations  and
other  constraints  that  are  associated  with  written  examinations.
• It shows that you can work and think independently.
Academic Integrity
• All  work  submitted  to  the  IB  for  moderation  or  assessment  must
be  authenticated  by  a  teacher, and  must  not   include  any  known
 instances  of
suspected  or  confirmed  malpractice.
• Each  student  must  sign  the  coversheet  for
internal  assessment  to  confirm  that  the  work  is  his  or  her
authentic  work  and  constitutes  the  final  version  of   that  work.
• Students shall be familiar with the schools Academic Integrity policy
When?
IA-deadlines (to be handed in on MB):

Choice of topic
Introduction
Data or similar
Calculations
Draft (you’ll get written feedback on this. It’s important that the draft is as
close as possible to the final version.)
Final version
The teacher’s role

• As  part  of  the  learning  process,  teachers  can

give  advice  to  students  on  a  draft  of  the
exploration.
• This   advice  should  be  in  terms  of  the  way  the  work  could  be
improved,  but  this  draft  must  not  be  heavily   annotated  or edited
 by  the teacher.
• The  next  version  handed  to  the  teacher  after
the draft  must  be  the  final   one.
Criteria
• Criterion  A – Presentation (4 marks)
• Criterion  B - Mathematical  communication (4 marks)
• Criterion  C - Personal engagement (3 marks)
• Criterion  D – Reflection (3 marks)
• Criterion  E - Use  of  mathematics (6 marks)
How to choose a topic?
The choice of topic is important since it shall be something you’re
interested in since you’ll work with it quite a lot.
When deciding on a topic, think about:

- What area of the syllabus interests you most?

- What other subjects do you take (especially HL-subjects)? Can you
connect them with maths?
- What are your hobbies and interests outside school?

Note: You shall discuss your choice of topic with your teacher before
starting working with the IA!
