Albert Bandura
 Born on December 04, 1925
 Canadian, American

Basic Social Learning Workshop

Concepts
Observational Learning – people
can learn through observation
Intrinsic Reinforcement – mental
states are important for learning
The Modeling Process – learning
does not lead to a change in behavior.

Observational Learning
Live model: Involves an actual individual
demonstrating or acting out a behavior.
Verbal instructional model: Involves descriptions
and explanations of a behavior.
Symbolic model: Which involves real or fictional
characters displaying behaviors in books, films,
television programs, or online media.

Intrinsic Reinforcement
a form of internal reward, such as pride,
satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment.
Modeling Process
 Not all observed behaviors are effectively learned. Factors involving both the model and
the learner can play a role in whether social learning is successful.
 The following steps are involved in the observational learning and modeling process:
 Attention
 Retention
 Motor reproduction
 Motivation

Bandura’s Experiment on Modeling

The Bobo Doll Study:
 "Bobo doll" studies showed observational learning and the impact it can have
on violent behavior in children.
 Albert Bandura's Bobo doll study in 1961 was a classic study that demonstrates
the social learning theory. The study showed that after viewing adults strike and
kick a Bobo doll. children would imitate the behavior in another environment.
This was important, as it suggests that the violence could be imitated by
viewers.
 Results showed 88% of the children imitated aggressive behavior following the
viewing of the tape of adults acting aggressively toward the doll.
 8 months later 40% of the same children reproduced the violent behavior
observed in the Bobo doll experiment.

General Principles of Social Learning

Theory
People can learn by observing the behavior of others
and then imitating the behavior overtly.
Learning can occur without a change in behavior.
Cognition plays a role in learning.
Individuals are more likely to adopt a modeled behavior
if it results in outcomes they value. o Individuals are
more likely to adopt a modeled behavior if the model is
similar to the observed and has admired status and the
behavior has functional value.
