Unit 4

This 3rd grade math lesson focuses on patterns and sequences. The objectives are for students to be able to evaluate problems with patterns, recognize multiplication in patterns, and identify shape patterns and determine the next figure. The lesson defines patterns as arrangements that repeat shapes or numbers at regular intervals. It provides examples of number patterns using skip counting, multiplication, and repeated addition. Students are asked to identify shape patterns by determining the sequence of shapes. The lesson emphasizes paying attention to pattern elements and not guessing the next term. Students complete example pattern problems to practice.

LESSON
Standards and Objectives
• 3.ATO.9 Identify a rule for an arithmetic pattern (e.g., patterns in the addition
table or multiplication table).

• Students will be able to evaluate problems that have patterns

• Students will be able to recognize multiplication in patterns
• Students will be able to identify shape patterns and determine the next figure
What is a pattern?
(Click title to see info)

A pattern is an arrangement of lines or shapes, or a

design in which the same shape is repeated at regular
intervals.
How can we identify patterns with numbers?
(Click titles to see info)

Here’s How
Skip Counting
2,4,6,8,10... This pattern adds 2 every time

Multiplication Here’s How

5,10,15,20,25… This pattern multiplies by 5

Repeated Addition Here’s How

4,8,12,16,20… This pattern repeats 4+4+4+4…
How can we identify patterns with shapes?
(Click on picture then question for answer)

• To find a shape pattern, you need to identify the sequence of

shapes that is being repeated. To complete a shape pattern, you
must look at the last known shape and add the next shape to the
sequence.

What shape needs to be in that underlined

space?

A yellow star !!
Important Tips with Patterns
• Pay attention to the shapes or numbers in the patterns

• With numbers in patterns, identify the rule first

• With shapes in patterns, identify the shapes in order first

• With any pattern, do not guess! There is always a sequence of repeated

objects or numbers!
