• When you start writing the supporting sentences ( the body ), make use of :

1- Sequence adverbs / connectors (time-order words) such as First, Second, Third,

Next, Then……….

2- Modals+base / infinitives / imperatives

E.g. First, you have to break up with all your friends who smoke. ( Modal+ base)
OR
The first step is to break up with all smokers. ( infinitive)

Firstly, break up with all relatives and friends who smoke. ( Imperative)
Process paragraph writing
• Each step in the process paragraph can be followed by a supporting
sentence ( reason , explanation, definition, surprising facts or numbers
….etc)
E.g. First, you have to break up with all your friends who smoke. This step makes you
less motivated to smoke ,for smoking is partly an action of imitating others. The second
step is to find useful ways to spend your free time. Spending your free time usefully and
creatively will give you no time to think of cigarettes. ………..etc
Process paragraph writing
• The paragraph ends with a concluding sentence that restates / paraphrases the topic
sentence.
E.g. All in all ,following the previous steps will make the process of quitting
smoking much easier and lead you to healthier body and cleaner lungs.

Note: With the exception of ‘Then’ , when time-order words are used as adverbs at the
beginning of the sentences , use the comma after all of them.
First(ly), boil a liter of water.
Next, put some tea in the pot.
Then add a spoon of sugar.
Finally, pour the boiling water and stir the mixture.
Modals
In process paragraphs , different modals can be used to express variety of meanings,
specially in the body of the paragraph.

Should / had better ( advisability) E.g. First, you should organize your time.
Must / have to ( necessity ) E.g. You must apply for the visa.
Can ( ability & possibility ) E.g. you can also see a nutritionist.
Must not ( prohibition) E.g. You must not use your camera.
Do/ does not have to ( lack of necessity) E.g. You do not have to bring your passport.

*Note that all modals must be followed by the base form of the verb regardless of the tense.
