Refrigerants
A substance which produces a refrigerating effect by its absorption
of heat while expanding or evaporating.

Types of Refrigerants
1. Primary Refrigerants – refrigerants used in vapor compression
systems.
2. Secondary Refrigerants – these are liquids used for transporting
low-temperature heat energy from one location to another. It is
also called anti-freezers or brines.
Primary Refrigerants
Types of Primary Refrigerants
1. Halocarbons
2. Hydrocarbons
3. Inorganic Compounds
4. Azeotropes
5. Expendable Refrigerants
Refrigerants: Halocarbons
Halocarbon Refrigerants contains one or more of the three
halogens – Chlorine, Fluorine, and Bromine.
Refrigerants: Hydrocarbons
Hydrocarbons are suitable refrigerants especially for service in the
petroleum and petrochemical industry.
Refrigerants: Inorganic Compounds
Refrigerants: Azeotropes
An azeotrope refrigerant is a mixture of two (2) refrigerants.
Refrigerants: Expendable Refrigerants
These refrigerants are used to cool a substance or an evaporator.
After which, the refrigerant is then released into the atmosphere.
Secondary Refrigerants
These are liquids used for transporting low-temperature heat
energy from one location to another. It is also called anti-freezers or
brines.

Commonly used Secondary Refrigerants:

1. Calcium Chloride
2. Sodium Chloride
3. Ethylene Glycol
4. Propylene Glycol
Refrigerant Groupings & Classifications
• Class 1 – This class includes refrigerants that cool by phase change
(typically boiling), using the refrigerant's latent heat.
• Class 2 – These refrigerants cool by temperature change or
“sensible heat”, the quantity of heat being the specific heat capacity
times the temperature change.
• Class 3 – This group consists of solutions that contain absorbed
vapors of liquefiable agents or refrigerating media.
Refrigerant Groupings & Classifications
NRSC – National Refrigeration Safety Code
• Group 1 – safest of the refrigerants
• Group 2 – toxic and somewhat flammable
• Group 3 – flammable
Refrigerant Groupings & Classifications
NBFU – National Board of Fire Underwriters
• Group 1 – most toxic
• Group 2
• Group 3
• Group 4
• Group 5
• Group 6 – least toxic
Refrigerants & Cylinder Colors
Refrigerants
Refrigerants are heavily regulated due to their toxicity,
flammability and the contribution of CFC and HCFC refrigerants
to ozone depletion and that of HFC refrigerants to climate change.
