GREAT EXPECTATIONS

PLOT:
 The story revolves around Pip, an orphan, who lives with his
sister (Biddy), and his brother-in-law, Mr Joe Gregory.
 While visiting his parent’s graves one day, he encountered 
Abel Magwitch, an escaped convict.
 The convict threatened pip to bring food and file for him.
 Later Pip is requested to pay visits to Miss Havisham who
lives at Satis House.
 Along with her lives Estella, her adopted daughter.
 Pip falls in love with Estella. Ashamed of his humble
background he hopes to become a gentleman, in order to win
Estellas heart.
SOCIAL ISSUES (GREAT EXPECTATION)
 Social Class determine the manner in which a person is treated and
their access to education. (How the poor and rich were treated).
 Great Expectations has a Varity of Social issues: Social injustice,
Moral Failure, Child Poverty and lack of Education.
 Social injustice: In Victorian time child is not anyone’s
responsibility, child had to do child labor to feed himself.
 Moral Failure: When pip gained unexpected wealth he got up and
left biddy and joy who were financially challenged, he also
abandoned the people who raised him.
 Lack of Education: To become and have great wealth pip accepted
the offer of money from Mr. Jagger from an unknown benefactor.
