Probability Sampling

Simple Random Sampling

• In simple random sampling each member of the target
population has an equally likely chance or equal
probability of being considered.
• In addition, each unit, in the entire population, has an
equal chance of being included in the sample in each
single drawing.
• To draw a simple random sample, a researcher starts with
a list of every single member of the population of interest.
This list is sometimes referred to as a sampling frame.
• The sample is selected using either the lottery or random
number table
• Sampling with or without replacement
Systematic Random Sampling
• A Systematic Sample is obtained by selecting every kth individual
from the population. The first individual
• selected correspond to a random number between 1 and k.
• Steps in Systematic sampling
• 1. Make sure that you have a finite population of size N, and
enumerate each individual.
• 2. Decide on how large your sample will be, n.
• 3. Calculate N/n, and round, up or down, to an integer. Let that
integer be k.
• 4. Randomly select a number between 1 and k, call that number j.
• 5. Thus the sample will consist of the following enumerated
individuals:
• j, j+k, j+2k, …j+(n-1)k.
Stratified random Sampling
• obtained by dividing the population into separate
homogeneous categories, or groups, that do not
overlap. Such groups are called Strata
• take a sample by simple random sampling from each
stratum. These chosen subsamples will form the
stratified sample needed.
• Stratified sampling ensures that important subgroups
in the population are represented proportionally in the
sample.
Cluster Sampling

• Stratified sampling is an effective procedure, but it

still doesn’t solve the problem of trying to sample
from a huge population, when it is often impossible
to acquire a complete list of individuals.
• In Cluster sampling, solves the problem. With this
approach, the researcher randomly selects a cluster
of people all having some feature in common.
• All members of the selected clusters will be included
in the sample.
