Related to the overall term “fitness” which is


defined as a capacity of an individual who has
sufficient energy to do hid daily task without
fatigue, has some energy reserved in case of
emergencies.

Health-Related Component

1. Cardiovascular (Cardiorespiratory) fitness


– is the capacity of the heart and the lungs to
sustain oxygen to the muscles for a prolonged
period of time.

2. Muscular endurance – refers to the ability


of the muscle to work over a prolonged
period of time without fatigue.

3. Muscular Strength – refers to the


maximum amount of force a muscle can exert
against an opposing force.

4. Flexibility – is the ability to move a body


part through a full range of motion at a joint.

5. Body Composition – is the ratio of body


fat to lean body mass. Having too much fat
tissues is a risk factor for cardiovascular
diseases.

Cardiovascular fitness

- refers to the muscles and function of the heart.


It includes the healthy circulation of the blood
which provides warming of the muscles that leads
to a good stretch of flexibility level.
• Warm-up and stretching - both play a big part
in maintaining flexibility.

• Warm-up - exercises prepare your mind and


body for activity by gradually increasing blood
flow to your muscles and raising your body
temperature.

Nature and Background of Basketball

Basketball is a team sport, in which the goal is to


shoot a ball through a basket that is positioned on
both ends of the courts. Typically, two teams of
five players play on a rectangular court.
Basketball is one of the world’s most popular and
extensive watched sports.

Basketball was discovered by James Naismith


a Canadian in December 1891.

students instead of one that relies on strength.

parts of the world, and was played by both women
and men. The game also became popular to U.S.
servicemen in Worlds War II as a casual outdoor
game.
• The Philippine Basketball
Association (PBA) is a men’s
professional league composed of
twelve company branded
franchised teams. It is the first
professional basketball league in
Asia and is the second oldest
continuously existing in the world
after the NBA.
• The men’s national basketball of the
Philippines represents the Philippines
in International Basketball
competitions. It is managed by the
Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas
(Basketball Federation of the
Philippines (SBP). A 1936 founding
member of FIBA Asia, the Philippines
is one of its oldest teams and has one
of Asia’s longest basketball traditions.
• Gilas PIlipinas and the Gilas Cadets represent
the current men’s national team.
• The Philippines successfully won the right to
host one of the three Olympic qualifiers in
2016.
• Manila joins Turin, Italy, and Belgrade, Serbia
as hosts for 18 teams hoping to earn three bids
to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de
Janeiro, the tournament will be held on the
week of July 4-10.

compare to men’s basketball.

level. It uses the waist
when passing the ball.

• Shooting is the
offensive weapon in
basketball. It is defined
as the act of throwing or
putting the ball inside
the goal or the ring.
What is the importance of
studying Basketball?
• Basketball teaches you about being a
good team player and can be a great
social sport. Adults should check
with their doctor before taking
up basketball. Basketball puts a lot
of stress on the body and injuries can
happen, so warming up, stretching
your muscles and joints, and cooling
down is important
