your observation/s.
Lesson 2A:
Safety Procedures in Maintaining Hand
Tools Drawing Instruments, Equipment,
and Paraphernalia
Good Quality tools can be a big investment,
but if you take good care of them, they will last
longer and return the favor. Making sure your
tools are properly stored, cleaned, and well
maintained will save you time and money as
well as making your projects and jobs much
easier.
You are already familiar with the different
hand tools and their proper use. Now you need
to know how to be safe in maintaining these.
The use of hand tools in accomplishing task
and job orders greatly increase the productivity
and accuracy of a worker. Although hand tools
provide convenience and ease in completing
any task, they may also cause injuries and
infirmities.
A worker must always be aware of the
task he must accomplish so that he would
know the hand tools that he needs. Choosing
the correct tools for a specific task will
reduce the chance of inflicting bodily
injuries. Selecting the wrong tool may
damage the tool itself and harm the user.
Reading the operational procedures of a
particular tool is greatly advised.
Safety Procedures in Maintaining Hand
Tools
1. All tools must be kept in good condition
with regular maintenance.
2. Each tool must be examined before use
and damaged or defective tools not be
used.
3. Workspace must also
be observed properly.
Safety Procedures in
Maintaining Hand Tools
4. Correct posture must be
practiced when using
hand tools.
5. Use the proper personal
protective equipment (PPE)
necessary to protect you from
exposure to potential hazards.
Proper Care of Drafting Tools and
Equipment
DO’S
1. Wipe the top of your drawing board before
starting to work. A clean table serves a clean
drawing paper.
2. Check and clean your tools before and after
using them. A clean tool does not smear your
drawing.
3. Always keep your pencil points sharp. A sharp
pencil produces sharp and neat lines.

drafting tools, instruments, and equipment
DO’S
4. Use tools only for the purpose they are made.
Every tool has its purpose.
5. Store your tools in a dry, clean, and safe
place. A dry, clean, and safe place extends the
life and service of your hand tools.
List of Do’s and Don’ts on the proper care of
drafting tools, instruments, and equipment
DON’Ts
1. Do not use the edge of the T-square and triangles
as a guide in cutting paper. It will break the edge
of these tools and they will not help produce
straight lines.
2. Do not sharpen your pencil on top of your
workplace. The graphite might contaminate the
drawing paper. It will make the surface dirty.

tools, instruments, and equipment
DON’Ts
3. Do not bite the lead of your pencils. Lead is
poisonous. It retards the brain.
4. Do not drop the compass and ruling pen and
divider. It might cause a nick on the ribs of the
instruments.
5. Do not erase on surfaces and spaces without
mistakes. A surface rubbed by an eraser tends
to ink bleed and smear.

90
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, you
should be able to:
1. identify measuring tools based on the
object to be measured or job
requirements; and
2.select appropriate measuring
instruments according to job
requirements. 91
LESSON 3A: DIFFERENT MEASURING TOOLS,
INSTRUMENTS, AND THEIR
APPLICATIONS
Importance of Measuring Tools
Measuring tools are essential for examining a
finished product or semi-finished product.
• The inspection includes checking an object
based on the required dimensions given on
the diagram or a sketch.
• Measurements must be accurate.
92
MEASURING TOOLS
1. T-Square
- is used as a guide in
drawing horizontal
lines and in
measuring up to 48”
straight line.
93
MEASURING TOOLS
2. TRIANGLES
- are used for drawing
vertical and oblique
lines.
-The most used
triangles: 45º and 30ºx
60º.
94
PROPER USE OF TRIANGLES
95
3. Ruler
- The most popular type of
measuring tool.
- It is usually 6 or 12 inches in
length.
- It is needed for measuring sizes
and distances.
96
4. Triangular Scale
- is used in general drawing.
- Its main purpose is to reproduce the
dimension in full size or to reduce or
enlarge them on a drawing.
- Scales help a drafter keep the
proportions accurate.
97
5. Protractor
100
The figure below can be measured and drawn using
a protractor.
101
6. Tape ruler
- It provides an easy means for accurately
measuring curved surfaces.
- is a concave, spring-steel blade ranging from
1/4" to 1" wide and 6 to about 300 feet in
length, coiled inside a carrying case.
102
7. Compass
- is used to draw circles, arcs, radii.
103
8. Divider
- is used for dividing distances into a
number of equal parts by the trial-
and-error method.
104
How to Take Care of Drafting Measuring Tools
Tools will last longer when properly kept and maintained.
A good worker or draftsman keeps and takes care of these
tools. The following are some pointers:
1. Be sure to inspect tools before using them. This is to
check if they are in working condition. This can be
detected when there is ease and speed when in use.
