Lesson 2A:
Safety Procedures in Maintaining Hand
Tools Drawing Instruments, Equipment,
and Paraphernalia
Good Quality tools can be a big investment,
but if you take good care of them, they will last
longer and return the favor. Making sure your
tools are properly stored, cleaned, and well
maintained will save you time and money as
well as making your projects and jobs much
easier.
You are already familiar with the different
hand tools and their proper use. Now you need
to know how to be safe in maintaining these.
The use of hand tools in accomplishing task
and job orders greatly increase the productivity
and accuracy of a worker. Although hand tools
provide convenience and ease in completing
any task, they may also cause injuries and
infirmities.
A worker must always be aware of the
task he must accomplish so that he would
know the hand tools that he needs. Choosing
the correct tools for a specific task will
reduce the chance of inflicting bodily
injuries. Selecting the wrong tool may
damage the tool itself and harm the user.
Reading the operational procedures of a
particular tool is greatly advised.
Safety Procedures in Maintaining Hand
Tools
1. All tools must be kept in good condition
with regular maintenance.
2. Each tool must be examined before use
and damaged or defective tools not be
used.
3. Workspace must also
be observed properly.
Safety Procedures in
Maintaining Hand Tools
4. Correct posture must be
practiced when using
hand tools.
5. Use the proper personal
protective equipment (PPE)
necessary to protect you from
exposure to potential hazards.
Proper Care of Drafting Tools and
Equipment

As a drafting student, you should know how

to take good care of your tools, instruments, and
equipment to utilize them for a long time and to
serve you better. You must be responsible in
handling them properly. Below is the list of do’s
and don’ts on the proper care of drafting tools,
instruments and equipment.
List of Do’s and Don’ts on the proper care of drafting
tools, instruments, and equipment

DO’S
1. Wipe the top of your drawing board before
starting to work. A clean table serves a clean
drawing paper.
2. Check and clean your tools before and after
using them. A clean tool does not smear your
drawing.
3. Always keep your pencil points sharp. A sharp
pencil produces sharp and neat lines.
List of Do’s and Don’ts on the proper care of
drafting tools, instruments, and equipment

DO’S
4. Use tools only for the purpose they are made.
Every tool has its purpose.
5. Store your tools in a dry, clean, and safe
place. A dry, clean, and safe place extends the
life and service of your hand tools.
List of Do’s and Don’ts on the proper care of
drafting tools, instruments, and equipment

DON’Ts
1. Do not use the edge of the T-square and triangles
as a guide in cutting paper. It will break the edge
of these tools and they will not help produce
straight lines.
2. Do not sharpen your pencil on top of your
workplace. The graphite might contaminate the
drawing paper. It will make the surface dirty.
List of Do’s and Don’ts on the proper care of drafting
tools, instruments, and equipment
DON’Ts
3. Do not bite the lead of your pencils. Lead is
poisonous. It retards the brain.
4. Do not drop the compass and ruling pen and
divider. It might cause a nick on the ribs of the
instruments.
5. Do not erase on surfaces and spaces without
mistakes. A surface rubbed by an eraser tends
to ink bleed and smear.
Any questions? Doubts? Need Clarification?
Question & Answer:

1. Which of the safety

procedures do you
consider the most
important? Why?
QUIZ NO.2
Directions: Modified True or False. Write
TRUE if the statement is correct and if false,
change the underlined word or group of words
to make it correct.

1. Wipe the bottom of your drawing board before

starting to work.

2. All tools must be kept in good condition with
irregular maintenance.
3. Workspace must also be observed properly.
4. Use the edge of the T-square and triangles as a
guide in cutting paper.
5. Lead is poisonous. It retards the brain.
Reminder:

Bring short bond paper,

PREPARING AN INSPECTION REPORT
TO THE PROPERTY CUSTODIAN

RONA M. TAPIA

66
Review of the Previous Lesson
• What are the various forms used in
drafting works?
• Requisition Slip Form
• Purchase Requisition Form
• Delivery Receipt Form
• Inventory Form
• Borrower’s Slip 67
What are the five (5) departments involved
in receiving and storing tools and
materials?
•Receiving Department
•Purchasing Department
•Inspection Department
•Accounting Department
•Materials and Production Planning
Department 68
MOTIVATIONAL QUESTION:
• Whom do you think is
responsible and has the
authority for the physical
custody of property in our
school?
• PROPERTY CUSTODIAN
69
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, you
should be able to:
1. enumerate procedures in preparing an
inspection report to the property
custodian; and
2.follow procedures in preparing an
inspection report to the property
custodian. 70
LESSON 2C: PROCEDURES IN PREPARING
AN INSPECTION REPORT TO THE
PROPERTY CUSTODIAN

The property custodian is the

overall in charge of the storage
and maintenance of all hand
tools, equipment, and
paraphernalia in a workplace. 71
Property custodian
• It is his task to make sure that
all equipment is well-kept and
organized.
• It is his duty to keep track of
all the details when it comes
to the status of all hand tools
that are in his care. 72
Since there are a lot of workers requesting
for tools from the property custodian, being
able to report the status of all borrowed or
requested tools must be accomplished. This
would help the custodian to have an easier
compilation of all the assessment of all the
tools.
The succeeding topic will teach you the
two scenarios in writing a report to the
custodian, one with no issues and the other
that incurred damages to the tools. 73
Procedures if there were no malfunctions or
technical hitches after the completion of the
job requirement:
1. Bring the request form and return all tools
to the property custodian.
2. The return report would have to state that
all returned tools are still in proper
operating condition.
3. After handing over the tools, make sure that
the property custodian waives your
accountability form. 74
Procedures if there were problems that
occurred during the completion of a job
requirement that resulted in damaging a tool
or equipment
1. It must be reported right away. The
property custodian must know immediately
of any mishaps or damages to any requested
tools. This is so the property custodian
could issue a replacement right away.
2. Request for another set of tools to use.
75
3. Once the job requirement is finished, prepare
the tools to be returned.
4. Be sure to attach an explanation detailing the
events that caused the tool or equipment to be
damaged.
5. Have the report received by the property
custodian so that a proper investigation can
start. If proven that there was no negligence on
the part of a worker, a worker must be waived
of any accountability for the damages.
76
Keep in Mind!
• Although different procedures are
followed in different organizations,
the main virtue to remember is
honesty.
• It is the responsibility of everyone to
submit reports regarding the status
of tools, equipment, and
paraphernalia without lies and deceit.
77
• Having truthful reports will lead
to better inspection and
assessment of tools in the future.
• It is then the responsibility of
the property custodian to test
whether the returned tools and
equipment are still in good
operating condition.
78
• Reports must be signed by the
borrower and the property
custodian and formalized by the
immediate supervisor as a
witness.
• The reports must then be
consolidated for future
reference and record keeping.
79
Any questions? Doubts? Need Clarification?

LESSON 3A: DIFFERENT MEASURING

TOOLS, INSTRUMENTS, AND THEIR
APPLICATIONS

RONA M. TAPIA

88
Review of the Previous Lesson
• He/she is the overall in-charge
for the storing and maintaining
of all hand tools, equipment, and
paraphernalia in a workplace.

89
MOTIVATIO
NAL
QUESTION:
•What do
you call this
tool?
•What it’s
importance?
90
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, you
should be able to:
1. identify measuring tools based on the
object to be measured or job
requirements; and
2.select appropriate measuring
instruments according to job
requirements. 91
LESSON 3A: DIFFERENT MEASURING TOOLS,
INSTRUMENTS, AND THEIR
APPLICATIONS
Importance of Measuring Tools
Measuring tools are essential for examining a
finished product or semi-finished product.
• The inspection includes checking an object
based on the required dimensions given on
the diagram or a sketch.
• Measurements must be accurate.
92
MEASURING TOOLS

1. T-Square

- is used as a guide in
drawing horizontal
lines and in
measuring up to 48”
straight line.

93
MEASURING TOOLS

2. TRIANGLES
- are used for drawing
vertical and oblique
lines.
-The most used
triangles: 45º and 30ºx
60º.

94
PROPER USE OF TRIANGLES

95
3. Ruler
- The most popular type of
measuring tool.
- It is usually 6 or 12 inches in
length.
- It is needed for measuring sizes
and distances.
96
4. Triangular Scale
- is used in general drawing.
- Its main purpose is to reproduce the
dimension in full size or to reduce or
enlarge them on a drawing.
- Scales help a drafter keep the
proportions accurate.

97
5. Protractor

- is used for measuring and setting of

angles other than those obtainable
with the triangles.

100
The figure below can be measured and drawn using
a protractor.

101
6. Tape ruler
- It provides an easy means for accurately
measuring curved surfaces.
- is a concave, spring-steel blade ranging from
1/4" to 1" wide and 6 to about 300 feet in
length, coiled inside a carrying case.

102
7. Compass
- is used to draw circles, arcs, radii.

103
8. Divider
- is used for dividing distances into a
number of equal parts by the trial-
and-error method.

104
How to Take Care of Drafting Measuring Tools
Tools will last longer when properly kept and maintained.
A good worker or draftsman keeps and takes care of these
tools. The following are some pointers:
1. Be sure to inspect tools before using them. This is to
check if they are in working condition. This can be
detected when there is ease and speed when in use.

2. After using a tool, clean it thoroughly with a damp

cloth. Wipe it dry with another piece of cloth before
keeping it.

105
How to Take Care of Drafting Measuring Tools

3. When not in use, the T-square is

preferably hung by inserting the hole into a
nail (attached to a wall) at the end of its
blade.

4. Do not abuse or misuse any piece of

drawing instrument.

106
How to Take Care of Drafting Measuring Tools
5. Avoid throwing tools at anybody instead hand
them over.

6. Avoid setting off the distances individually by

moving the scale to a new position each time,
because slight errors in the measurements may
accumulate and give rise to a large error.

107
