GENERAL MATHEMATICS
LOGARITHMIC FUNCTIONS, EQUATIONS
AND INEQUALITIES
The logarithmic function with base b defined by
f(x) = log b x is the inverse function of the
exponential function with base b whose value
is always positive. That is, y = log b x if and
only if x = by for b>0, b≠1, x>0.
An equation that involves an expression such as
log b x is called a logarithmic equation.
An inequality of the form log b x 0 or log b x 0,
or any variation of these type is called a
logarithmic inequality.
GENERAL MATHEMATICS
Common and Natural Logarithms

Common logarithms are logarithms with

base 10; log x is a short notation for log 10 x.

Natural logarithms are logarithms to the

base e (approximately 2.71828), and are
denoted by “ln”. In other words, ln x is
another way of writing log e x.

Steps in Solving Logarithmic Equations
1. Write all logarithmic equations on one side of the
equation and the constants on the other side.
2. Use the properties of logarithms to rewrite the
logarithmic expression as a single logarithmic
expression.
3. Use the definition of logarithm to rewrite the
expression in exponential form.
4. Simplify the exponential expressions and solve for the
variable.
5. Check your answer by substituting it into the original
equation. Exclude from the solution any logarithm of a
negative number, such value is called extraneous
solution. GENERAL MATHEMATICS

Steps in Solving Logarithmic Inequalities
1. Represent the inequality in standard form.
2. Determine the zeros of f(x).
3. Find the domain restriction and the intervals to
consider.
4. Solve for the test value of x.
5. Write the solution of the inequality.
Note:
• If the logarithmic inequality is of the form f(x) > 0 or f(x) 0,
then all of the intervals with the positive sign are solutions.
• If the logarithmic inequality is of the form f(x) < 0 or f(x) 0,
then all of the intervals with the negative sign are solutions.

Example 2: Find the solution for x in each
logarithmic inequality.
a. log (2x+5) < log (3x-1)
b. log (x+7) - 1 > log (x-2)

Solution:

a. log (2x+5) < log (3x-1)
log (2x+5) - log (3x-1) < 0
log (2x+5) - log (3x-1) = 0
log (2x+5)/(3x-1) = 0

GRAPH OF LOGARITHMIC FUNCTIONS
Graph of f(x) = a • logb (x-c) + d
•The value of b (b > 0 or 0 < b < 1) determines
whether the graph is increasing or decreasing.
•The value of a determines the stretch or
shrinking of the graph. Further, if a is negative,
there is a reflection of the graph about the x-axis.
•Based on y = a•log b x, the vertical shift is d units
up (if d > 0) or d units down (if d < 0) , and the
horizontal shift is c units to the right (if c> 0) or c
units to the left (if c < 0).
