Color Coding System in Construction Safety
Color-coding

Colour-coding system to be applied to manage all material handling equipments e.g. slings,
shackles and electric tools at site.

This ensure that these equipments are properly inspected, maintained and tagged for safe use
by the competent person for mechanical, structural, electrical or any other defect that could
result in failure of these equipments during use and result in serious accidents

Thus, Colour-coding is a physical identification to prevent the use of equipment that has not
been formally inspected

Different colours at work place are also used to denote specific services and facilities at work
place to safe guard and help employees

A competent person by virtue of knowledge and experience has to formally inspect

all slings, shackles, electric tools and machines before initial use on site. The
periodicity of inspection can be fixed as per project requirement. Generally, these
equipments are inspected on quarterly basis

All unsafe and defected slings, shackles, electric tools and machines are marked in
red colour and tagged accordingly to remove from the work place for repair and
maintenance or replacement
