Variations in

Real-Life
Learning Targets:
At the end of the discussion,
you are expected to:
1. solve problems involving
variations.
REVIEW:
Constant is any quantity whose
value does not change in a given
problem.

Variable is a quantity whose value

changes or varies in a given
problem
• Direct variation describes a linear
relationship between two
variables, inverse variation
describes another kind of
relationship. For two quantities
with inverse variation, as one
quantity increases, the other
quantity decreases.
Direct Variation – is a relationship
between two variables in which the
variables either increase or
decrease together at a constant
proportion.
Inverse Variation – is a
relationship between two variables
in which the product is equal to the
constant.
• y varies inversely as x and y = 12 when x = 5.
• If y varies inversely as x +1 and y = 10 when x
= 4, find y when x = 24.
Here are the ways to solve inverse variation word

problems.

• Understand the problem.

• Write the formula.
• Identify the known values and
substitute in the formula.
• Solve for the unknown.
Some examples of direct/inverse variation problems in real life:

• The number of hours you work and the amount of your paycheck.
• The amount of weight on a spring and the distance the spring will stretch.
• The speed of a car and the distance traveled in a certain amount of time.
• The number of fruit in kg directly proportional to price of fruit.

• The number of family members (which not work) are inversely

proportional to amount of saving.
• The working days required to complete the work are inversely proportional
to number of labors.
•  The acceleration is inversely proportional to time.
• The battery power is inversely proportional to time for which it used.
SAMPLE 1
•Example 3: Solve each direct variation problem.

• “The distance a body falls from rest varies directly as the square of the time it
falls (disregarding air resistance). If a sky diver falls 64 feet in 2 seconds, how far
will he fall in 8 seconds?”

Therefore, the sky diver falls 1024 ft. in 8 seconds.
SAMPLE 2
•Example 3: Solve each direct variation problem.

•“Over a given distance, speed varies inversely with time. If a race car
goes a certain distance in 3 hours at 190 miles per hour, what speed
is needed to go the same distance in 2 hours?”
Let’s Try!
• 1. The cost of a taxi fare (C)
varies directly as the distance
(D) travelled. When the
distance is 60 km, the cost is
$35. Find the cost when the
distance is 95 km.
• 2. The total cost of filling up your
car with gas varies directly with
the number of gallons of gasoline
that you are purchasing. If a
gallon of gas costs ₱112.5, how
many gallons could you purchase
for ₱ 900?
3. Art's wages are directly
proportional to the number of hours
he works per week. If Art works 36
hours in a week, he earns ₱540.
What are his wages if he works 40
hours in a week?
4. According to Hooke's Law, the force
needed to stretch a spring is
proportional to the amount the spring
is stretched. If fifty pounds of force
stretches a spring five inches, how
much will the spring be stretched by a
force of 120 pounds?
5. The amount of time t, needed to dig
ditches varies inversely with the of people
p, who are digging the ditches. If it takes 3
people 40 hours to dig a ditch, how many
hours will it take for 5 people to dig the
same size ditch?
The volume V of a gas varies
inversely as the pressure P on it. If
the volume is 240 under pressure
of 30  kg/  , what pressure has to be
applied to have a volume of 160    ?
The length of a violin string varies
inversely as the frequency of its vibrations.
A violin string 14 inches long vibrates at a
frequency of 450cycles per second. Find
the frequency of a 12 -inch violin string.
The number of pages Andrew reads per
hour varies inversely with the number
of paragraphs he must re-read for
clarification. If he is able to read 12
pages per hour, and must re-read 5
paragraphs, how many pages van he
read per hour if he has to re-read 6
paragraphs?
• If 5 men take 8 days to type 10
books, apply the principle of
variation to find out how many
days 8 men will take to type 2
books?
• The number of Math problems
Amelia gets finished while doing her
homework varies inversely with the
number of text messages she receives
while studying. If Amelia gets 12
problems finished while receiving 9
messages, how many problems does
she finish if she receives 4 messages?
• The number of pages Andrew reads
per hour varies inversely with the
number of paragraphs he must re-
read for clarification. If he is able to
read 12 pages per hour, and must re-
read 5 paragraph, how many pages
can he read per hour if he has to re-
read 6 paragraphs?
• Hooke’s Law states that the
displacement, d, that a spring is
stretched by a hanging object varies
directly as the mass of the object. If
the distance is 10 cm when the mass
is kg, what is the distance when the
mass is 5 kg?
On Planet X, an object falls 18 feet in 2
seconds. Knowing that the distance it falls
varies directly with the square of the time
of the fall, how long does it take an object
to fall 79 feet? Round your answer to three
decimal places.
The intensity I of light received from a
source varies inversely as the square of the
distance d from the source. If the light
intensity is 4 foot-candles at 11 feet, find
the light intensity at 13 feet.
The weight of a body varies inversely
as the square of its distance from the
center of the earth. If the radius of the
earth is 4000 miles, how much would
a 200-pound man weigh 1000 miles
above the surface of the earth?
