1. ARCHITECTURE DESIGN AND ALLIED ARTS
• The order of national artist { Orden ng Pambansang Alagad ng
Sining} is the highest national recognition given to a Filipino
individuals who have made significant contributions to the
development of Philippines arts; namely, music, dance, theater,
visual arts, literature, film, broadcast arts, and architecture and
allied arts. The order in jointly administered by the national
commission for culture and the arts (NCCA) and the cultural
center of the Philippines (CCP) and conferred by the president of
the Philippines upon recommendation by both institutions.
The order of national artists award is one of the honors
conferred by the republic of the Philippines that embodies
the nation’s highest ideals in the humanities and aesthetic
expression through the distinct achievements of individuals
citizens. While the republic of bestows due recognition to
those singular achievements, it also honor it’s own cultural
heritage, whose enrichment, enhanced, and given direction.
• Born at the turn of the country, National artist for the Architecture Pablo Sebero
Antonio pioneered modern Philippine architecture. His basic design is grounded
on simplicity, no clutter. The lines are clean and smooth and where there are
curves, these are made integral to the structure. Pablo Jr. points out “For our
father, every line must have a meaning, a purpose. For him, functions comes first
before elegance or form”. The other thing that characterizes an Antonio structure
is the maximum use of natural light and cross ventilation. Antonio believes that
buildings “should be planned with austerity in mind and its stability forever as the
aim of true architecture , that buildings must be progressive, simple in design but
dignified, true to a purpose without resorting to an applied set of aesthetics and
should eternally recreate truth.
ANTONIO’S MAJOR WORKS INCLUDE THE
FOLLOWING:
• Juan F. Nakpil, architect, teacher, and civil leader, is a pioneer and innovator in
Philippine architecture. In essence, Nakpil’s greatest contribution is his belief
that there is such a thing as Philippine architecture, espousing architecture
reflective of Philippine traditions and culture. It is also largely due to his zealous
representation and efforts that private Filipino architects and engineers, by law,
are now able to participate in the design and execution of government projects.
He has integrated strenghth, function, and beauty In the buildings that are the
country’s heritage today. He designed the 1937 international Eucharistic Congress
altar and rebuilt and enlarged the Quiapo Church to the original design.
AMONG OTHERS, NAKPIL’S MAJOR WORKS ARE THE;
Ramon Valera was a Filipino fashion designer who was bestowed with a national
artist of the Philippines honor in 2006. He is the first and only Filipino fashion
designer to receive this to distinction to date. In 2017 his work was displayed in
an exhibit called Valera and the modern: an exhibit on the life and work of
national artist for fashion design, Ramon Valera which was curated by Gerry
Torres at De La Salle College of St. Benilde’s School of design and arts gallery.
Valera was born on august 31, 1912 in Santa Cruz Manila and finished his
education in De La Salle. He was first to introduced the onepiece terno that was
fastened in the back with a zipper. He re imagined the Maria Clara outfit by
adding bell sleeves and making it into a wedding gown.
Valera’s gown have been worn by notable Filipina women including Gloria
Romero, Barbara Perez, and Imelda Marcos.
