1 Introduction Lecture

This document provides an overview of a biomechanics and kinesiology course. The course covers topics such as kinematics, kinetics, the structure and function of joints, and biomechanics of tissues. Students learn terminology, osteokinematics, arthrokinematics, and the biomechanics of the shoulder and elbow joints. Assessment includes assignments, quizzes, a midterm exam, and a final exam. Understanding biomechanics is important for preventing injuries, orthotic device design, and developing effective rehabilitation programs based on biomechanical principles.

Biomechanics and kinesiology
• Definition of Terms

• Kinesiology : The scientific study of human motion( “kinesis” means to move

and “ology” means science).
• Kinesiology is based on three bodies of knowledge :
• Anatomy,
• Physiology
• and Biomechanics.
• • Anatomic kinesiology –
• study of human musculoskeletal system & musculotendinous system
Biomechanics- Study of mechanical factors affecting human
body at rest or in motion
• Kinematic can be further classified to Osteokinematics and
arthrokinematics
• Kinetics • Kinetic variables
• This is a much more complex
task to assess the internal and
external forces (kinetics) that are • Force
affecting the motion..   • Torque
• Moment
• Inertia
If we need to calculate the traction
force transmitted to the hip joint
• We measure the knee angle during the gait
cycle
• Her we measure the GRF by 3D
motion analysis system
We need to calculate the load on the IVD
during this position
Summary
z

 Why we study biomechanics ?

• The study of biomechanics is important when determining what
causes injuries and therefore how we can prevent them re-occurring
• Design and improve orthotic
devices
• Rehabilitation program is mainly dependent on sound biomechanical
principles
