INTRODUCTION TO JCI
z
The Joint Commission
International is an independent,
not-for-profit organization,
established more than 50 years
ago. Joint Commission is
governed by a board that
includes physicians, nurses, and
consumers. Joint Commission
sets the standards by which
health care quality is measured
in America and around the
world.
z
HISTORY
JCI was founded in 1994 and began operating on the state level
in Illinois. Following a decade of continuous success in that
state, the United State Federal Government mandated that any
medical center that wants to be part of the Medicare, needs to be
approved by the commission; a role that JCI continued to fulfill
until 2010.
In 1998 began accreditation on the international level and
outside of the United States. This international department is
now active in accreditation of medical centers in South America,
Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. This international department
also has offices in Dubai and Singapore as well.
z
MISSION
The mission of JCI is to
continuously improve the safety
and quality of care in the
international community through
the provision of education and
advisory services and international
accreditation and certification. JCI
envisions a future of zero harm
and highly reliable care delivery
and is committed to making it a
reality by collaborating with health
care organizations to transform

Importance of JCI in Medical Tourism
z
Today, Medical tourism is an independent and ever-growing industry with many hospitals
around the world joining in through founding their new IPD (International Patient Department)
sections. In any growing and prosperous industry or market, there will always be frauds and
rip offs, trying to take advantage of the growing trends.  Medical tourism is no exception. But
the industry itself will likewise react to this wave of suspicious entrants. There are now
additional accreditation and supervisory organizations being founded to oversee and
validate credible medical centers, in order to distinguish them from frauds.

There are several such organizations fulfilling this role in medical tourism, but none have the
authority and credibility that Joint Commission International possesses. JCI is a non-profit
accreditation organization and is the most credible and well-known of its kind, to the extent
that its role almost makes it a monopoly in accreditation of international medical centers. The
Golden Seal of the JCI is the most credible sign that a medical center active in the medical
tourism can acquire. In recent times, this seal has become more known among international
patients as well and enables them to choose their destination with greater care and ease.

JCI accreditation is an effective tool for brand recognition of the medical tourism hospital, as
it makes a global image of a particular medical center and the hospital.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY JCI
ACCREDITATION?
z

JCI Accreditation means that the

medical services provided by a hospital
are equivalent in quality and patient
safety to medical services
internationally. It also means that the
hospital is reliable in treating patients
according to international policies and
regulations. The most important
meaning of JCI accreditation is that the
staff in the hospital have promised to
provide safe patient care according to
the hospital policies and bylaws made
and approved by the staff members.
Accreditation Programs
z accreditation programs:
JCI provides four

 International Standards for Hospitals-> JCI’s standards for

hospitals have proven their value in public and private
organizations of all sizes in Europe, South America, Asia and the
Middle East.

 International Clinical Lab Standards-> Complete, accurate,

standards-based assessment of laboratory processes and
management practices is enabling clinical laboratories around the
globe to improve the efficiency, accuracy, and cost-effectiveness of
laboratory procedures.

 International Standards for the Care Continuum-> The new

standards meet a growing demand for an effective evaluation of
care and services outside acute care and in movement across the
care continuum over a lifetime. These consensus standards reflect
new models of care and service delivery emerging in many nations.

 International Standards for Medical Transport Organizations->

International standards for medical transport organizations are
built around a solid framework of quality and safety designed to
foster process improvements and support the development of
effective leadership within these organizations.
