The Evaporator and It’s Type

TE 505 RAC

Prepared By: Jhonatan T. Tictic

Evaporator
• It is here that the liquid refrigerant
is expanded and evaporated.
• It acts as a heat exchanger that
transfers heat from the substance
being cooled to a boiling
tempeature.
• It is used to extract heat from the
chamber where temperature
maintains is required.
Refrigerant liquid enters the
evaporator and absorb latent
heat from the chamber at
constant pressure and comes
out as vapor
Types of Evaporator According to
the mode of heat transfer
Force Convection Type
- Uses a fan or pump to force the liquid being cooled over the
evaporator.
- Fins are provided to increase heat transfer rate.
Natural Convection type
- Has the liquid being cooled flows naturally to the evaporator due to
the density differences of the chilled and warm liquid.
- Velocity of air depends upon the temperature difference
- Circulation of air depends upon its size, shape and location.
Evaporator According to
Construction Types
Types of Evaporator according
to Construction Types
Bare-tube evaporator
- In this type of evaporator the entire surface
of the coil is in contact with the refrigerant
inside.
- The bare-tube coil evaporators are
extensively used in household refrigerators
because they are easier to keep clean.
- The material used for bare tube evaporator is
steel or copper.
Plate Evaporator
• In this type of plate evaporator, the coils are either welded on one
side of a plate or between the two plates which are welded together
at the edges.
• The plate evaporators are generally used in house hold refrigerators,
home freezers, beverage cooler, ice cream cabinet etc.
Finned Evaporators
• In this type of evaporator the outer surface area is surrounded by thin
metallic plates called fins.
• Fins are thin metallic plates, usually aluminum or copper, securely
attached or banned to the evaporator tubes, with bare tube
evaporators. These fins increase the heat transfer efficiency of the
evaporator.
• Finned evaporators are used in air cooling application.
According to the manner in
which liquid refrigerant is fed
Flood type evaporator
- In this type of evaporator a constant refrigerant liquid level is
maintained. A front valve is used as throttling device which maintains a
constant liquid level in the evaporator. Due to the heat supplied by the
substance to be cooled, the liquid refrigerant vaporizes and so the
liquid level falls down.
Dry explosive evaporator
• This type of evaporator is designed to take so much superheat at its
outlet that no liquid goes back to the compressor.
• This design is very popular for home air conditioning units, rooftop
units, and package units because of lower initial cost and ease of
operations for units under 200 tons of capacity.
According to the operating
conditions
• Frosting Evaporator
-operates below 0 degree Celsius
-the frost forms on the evaporator comes from the moisture of the air
-cooling efficiency is decreases until the ice and frost is removed
• Non frosting Evaporator
-Operates above 0 degree Celsius therefore frost does not forms on
evaporators
Thermal Contact and Fin Spacing

• Good thermal contact between the fins and tubes is a must to ensure
efficient heat transfer.
• The spacing of the fin depend on the operaring temperature of the
coil. Low temperature application uses only 1 fin.
• Excessive finning may reduce the capacity of the evaporator by
restricting the flow of air over the coil hence the design engneers
must do a proper system calculation and simulation at design stage.
Evaporator Design Factors
Pressure Drop
The evapoartor must have sufficient space for the circulation of the
refrigerant without too much pressure drop between the outlet and
the inlet.
Temperature

The evaporator must have enough

surface to absorb the required heat load
in order to ensure the temperature
difference being cooled and the
refregirant is not excessive.
Liquid and Refrigerant Vapor

The evaporator must have enough

space for the liquid refrigerant and
the vapor to separate from the
liquid.
