Why is it called a cell phone?


Cellular phones are so called basically because the physical area they cover is in a
cellular format. The origin of the cell phone is said to date back to 1973, when the
mass consumer electronics company Motorola launched the first portable cell
phone, which was marketed under the name Motorola DynaTac 8000X.

This last decade has seen the birth of the smartphone as we know it today, a mix
of computer and cell phone, offering something we could not even dream of in the
days of the Nokia 3210, for example.

The idea of making a cell phone is not as new as its manufacture, since in 1947
the engineer D. H. Ring had already proposed some sketches to Bell Laboratories.
However, they lacked the technology to manufacture them.

In the 1960s, all the major telecommunications companies had the same concept
and competed to be the first to make it effective. Finally, the first company to
design a cell phone was Bell Laboratories, whose patent was approved in 1972.

However, the first prototype cell phone was demonstrated in 1973 by Motorola,
through a call from Martin Cooper on a New York street. The phone was a
DynaTAC 8000X model and the call was made precisely to his biggest competitor
in the field, Joel Engel of AT&T's Bell Laboratories.

The DynaTAC 8000X began shipping in 1984. It weighed about 1 kilo and measured
33 x 4.4 x 8.9 centimeters. Its battery allowed only one hour of communication or
eight hours of standby time on the network.

Smartphones were the biggest change in the history of cell phones. On the one
hand, it changed functionality, incorporating many aspects of computers. On the
other hand, it changed the design: phones promised to be increasingly smaller and
more discreet, but the arrival of smartphones introduced the need for large
screens.

Faced with the need to display information on the screens, keyboards were
eliminated and replaced by touch instructions within the screen, known as
touchscreen technology. In addition, bulkier, rectangular-shaped devices were
designed.

2014. The development of the future 5G technology is announced.
2017. The first smartphone with front camera (dual camera), from Alcatel, is commercialized.
