Arab Spring

The Arab Spring began in 2010 in Tunisia after a street vendor set himself on fire in protest of police harassment and corruption. His death sparked mass protests against authoritarian rule and economic problems. These demonstrations spread to other Arab countries facing similar issues and inspired by Tunisia's uprising. While some nations saw reforms, the Arab Spring had varying outcomes across the region and global effects that continue today.

The Arab Spring

The lead up to the Arab Spring

The Cause of the Arab Spring was due civil unrest
and the public's displeasure to the authoritarian rule in
many arab countries. It started after a Man (Mohamed
Bouazizi) killed himself due to being harassed by
police officers who attempted to shut down his
business with no recourse, and his suicide by self-
immolation galvanized Tunisian protesters. They
demonstrated against government corruption and
Tunisia’s autocratic president, Zine al-Abidine Ben
Ali. A month later, after 23 years in power, he fled to
Saudi Arabia. After the protest in Tunisia many other
Arab countries such as Egypt Syria, Jordan and many
others also began to revolt due to the same problem of
Tunisia and due to inspiration

State Crisis
Before the start of the Arab Spring there were many State Crisis that many
countries had. Some of the problems were unemployment and poverty, lack of
perspective for youngsters, human rights violations, government corruption, the
dislike towards the dictatorships, and inflation. All of these problems and the death
of Mohamed Bouazizi inspired and lead the people of all the countries involved to
protest against their individual governments.

4
Mass frustration
Due to the problems happening in many
countries people began to protest and
because of this some governments began
to kill protesters cause the people to
become even more mad. This cause
people like the Tunsisan President to
flee the country with his family. Some
countries did change but even with all
the protest not all countries had change.

Shared Motivation

The Arab Spring widely

spread through social media
causing shared motivation.
Many people in different
middle eastern and African
countries started protests
because of inflation, poverty
and unemployment. This
spiked protest in countries and
ended up causing
governments to be overthrown
and civil war. 6
Dissident Elites
Many different people supported
the arab spring. People on social
media tried to help by spreading
awareness and other people from
neighboring countries to Tunisia
also started protest because they
also agreed with why they were
protesting. Because of the dissident
elites a lot of change was able to
happen in the different countries
involved in arab spring some were
positive and some negative.

Outcome of the Arab Spring

The Arab Spring had a big effect to all countries involved and also countries
not involved. As shown in the map earlier they were many countries that were
influenced by the Arab Spring. For some of the middle eastern and african
countries they was some reform with the governments and some change did
happen. Even though many protests still continued for years to come, and an
additional wave of protests took place in the Arab world in the late 2010s and early
2020s. In some of the western countries there was some protests but similar to the
middle east not much change happened. But the Arab Spring still showed that with
enough people together there is some chance of reform and change happening.
