Authoritative parenting is associated with self-confident, socially skilled children who can regulate their emotions. Permissive parenting is linked to lower achievement and riskier behaviors. Neglectful parenting causes children to be anxious without family support and prone to substance abuse. Recent concerns include overuse of internet/devices by children without supervision, risking sleep, behaviors, and privacy issues. Effective parenting requires a safe environment, positive learning, discipline, limits, and self-care as a parent.

What is parenting Styles?

There are four widely researched styles of

parenting: authoritative, permissive,
authoritarian, and neglectful (univolved).
The styles range from controlling to
undemanding, and from cold and
unresponsive to loving and receptive. In
recent years, over-involved parents, who
are present in every aspect of their child’s
life, are often referred to as the fifth style.
They are also known as snowplow or
helicopter parents.

Parenting styles have been associated with a variety of child outcomes in areas like social
skills and academic performance. The children of authoritarian parents may:

Act fearful or overly shy around others;

Associate obedience and success with love;
Display more aggressive behavior toward others;
Have difficulty in social situations due to a lack of social competence;
Have lower self-esteem;
Struggle with self-control because they are rarely able to make choices and experience natural
consequences,

Research has also suggested that kids raised by permissive parents:

Display low achievement in many areas: Because their parents have little to no
expectations of them, these kids have nothing to strive toward. Studies have linked
permissive parenting to lower academic achievement;
Make poor decisions;
May be more prone to delinquency and substance use;
Show more aggression and less emotional understanding;
Unable to manage their time or habits:. These children never learn to limit their
screen time or eating habits, which can lead to unhealthy habits and obesity.

In one study, permissive parenting was linked to underage alcohol use; teens with
permissive parents were three times more likely to engage in heavy drinking.

Researchers also suggest that permissive parenting is linked to other risky behaviors
such as drug use and other forms of misconduct.

Conclusion
I conclude that the parenting styles affects ours behaviour and
personalities as a child, and something as adult. The way that the
parents take care or educate their children affects deeply on their
personality creation, and how we act and socialise with others.
The parents have to be more conscious about their acts and the
way they communicate with their children to create and build a
healthy and good environment and relationship in the home.
