facilities, establishment or institution
 Grant nursing breaks in addition to regular time-off for meals to
breastfeed and express breast milk
 Provision of facilities for breast milk collection, storage and

2011-2016 (August 2011)
Goal
Reduction of child mortality and morbidity through optimal feeding of
infants and young children

Outcomes
 90 percent of newborns are initiated to breastfeeding within one hour after birth;
(53.5%, NDHS 2008)
 70 percent of infants are exclusively breastfeed for the first 6 months of life; (34%,
NDHS 2008) and
 95 percent of infants are given timely adequate and safe complementary food starting at
6 months of age (58%, NDHS 2008)
Target
50 percent of hospitals providing maternity and child health services are certified
MBFHI (0/47 hospitals which were issued COC since 2007 applied for
accreditation to become MBF);
Course Objectives

To help equip the hospital staff with the knowledge


and skills needed to transform the health facilities
into a mother baby friendly institution through
implementation of the Ten Steps To Successful
Breastfeeding and to sustain policy and practice
changes.
Upon completion of the course, the
participants are expected to:
 Use communication skills to talk with pregnant women, mothers and
co workers
 Practice ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding and abide by the
International Code of Marketing of Breast milk Substitutes
 Discuss with pregnant women the importance of breastfeeding
 Facilitate skin to skin contact and early initiation of breastfeeding
 Assist mother to learn the skills of positioning and attaching her baby
as well as the skill of hand expression
 Discuss with a mother how to find support for
breastfeeding after she returns home
 Know whom to refer a non breastfeeding woman for
assistance in feeding her baby
 Identify practices that support/interfere with
breastfeeding
 Work with co-workers to highlight barriers to
breastfeeding

Length of the Course

20 Hours maybe presented in 3 consecutive


days. It is intended that every hospital staff in
direct responsibility to care for mothers and
babies will attend this course.
