Definition
• Yellowish discoloration of the skin and the mucosa
caused by the accumulation of excess of bilirubin in
tissue and plasma (serum bilirubin >7mg/dl)
• Around 60% of term and 80% of preterm baby
becomes visibly jaundiced in the first week of life.
• About 30-50 % term newborn develops clinical
jaundice.
