4-Testing Differential Protection

This document discusses testing differential protection (87) and includes the following topics: 1. It provides an example of the ratio of operate coil and restraint coil being 20% for differential protection and discusses a pickup setting of 25%. 2. It describes negative sequence current fault discrimination which compares the phase angle of negative sequence currents from local and remote ends to determine if a fault is internal or external. 3. It discusses charging current compensation which continuously estimates differential current and keeps the pre-fault estimate during faults to compensate for charging current. 4. It explains that an open CT detection feature blocks differential protection to prevent unexpected operations under normal load conditions from an open CT.

The ratio of operate coil and restraint coil is 20%
)0.2 , 0.2 * 100 =20%=)10A/50A((= )Iop/Ires(
The pickup setting of this relay is 25% so the restraint coil is applying more force than
the operate coil and the relay will NOT TRIP

D-Open CT detection feature

The open CT circuit condition creates unexpected operations for Line differential-1
.protection under the normal load conditions

Open CT detection function will block Line differential protection function-2

The search for an open CT starts after 60 seconds (50 seconds in 60 Hz systems)-3
since the bias current enters the 10–110% range
E-2nd and 5th harmonic analysis

Transformer inrush currents and CT saturation cause high degrees of second-1

.the protected zone

If we have internal fault at the same time as the harmonic content is above set level-3
and the differential current is below IdMinHigh, will block a trip
