Lecture 2 - Fixed Function IC Technology

The document summarizes different types of system design technology: (1) Fixed-Function ICs which perform specific fixed functions with advantages of low cost and fast design but disadvantages of large size and easy copying. (2) Full custom ASICs which have smallest size and lowest power but highest costs and longest time-to-market. (3) Semi custom ASICs and PLD technology which provide design flexibility but higher costs than fixed-function ICs.

(ii) Disadvantages of the full custom ASIC are:

- High NRE cost
- High per product cost for low volume
- Maximum design effort
- Longest time-to-market
- Zero Flexibility
