Remember….
• You don’t need to learn all the vocabulary for

• Just make sure you know 2 or 3 ways to
describe each different change in the line.

What else is important?
• You should have about 4 paragraphs.
• You should use a range of vocabulary and
grammar.
• You should use connecting words- In addition,
Moreover, However etc
• You need an overview of the main ideas
• You need to make comparisons
The Introduction Paragraph
Be very specific about what you can see. How many years
does the graph show? What is the information about?
Change the words from the question (paraphrase), so
you don’t lose points for repetition.

For example if the question says:

This chart shows > change to > The graph illustrates/The
graph gives information about

The amount of people who went shopping > change to>

The number of customers who… etc

Give an Overview
• The main trends (try not to write specific data)
• Words you might want to use: Overall,
‘most/least’
• Look at the start and end to get an overall
idea of the trend. If it is lower at the start and
higher at the end, the overall trend is
upwards.
Overall, the consumption of fish and chips declined over the
period, whereas the amount of pizza and hamburgers that were
eaten dramatically increased.
In 1975, the most popular fast food with Australian teenagers was
fish and chips, eaten 100 times a year. This was far higher than pizza
and hamburgers, which were consumed approximately 5 times a

year. However, apart from a brief rise again from 1980 to 1985, the
consumption of fish and chips gradually declined over the 25 years
to finish at just under 40.
In contrast to this, teenagers ate the other two fast foods at much higher
levels with a similar trend. Pizza consumption increased gradually until it
overtook the consumption of fish and chips in 1990. It then levelled off from
1995 to 2000. The biggest rise was seen in hamburgers as the times they were
eaten increased sharply throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s, exceeding that of
fish and chips in 1985. It finished at a similar level that fish and chips began
with consumption around 100 times per year.
