What is a
healthy life?
It’s a healthy lifestyle that keeps you
fit, energetic and at a reduced risk of
disease. According to WHO(World
Health Organization), healthy living is
a way of life that helps you enjoy
more aspects of your life. It is a way
of living that reduces the risk of
becoming seriously ill or dying
prematurely. Health is not just about
avoiding illness or disease.
Why do we need a healthy
life?
A healthy lifestyle is
important for everyone. When
we look after our physical
health, we feel better too
fitter, more relaxed and
better able to cope with
things.
What makes a
balanced lifestyle?
Balanced living means considering all
aspects of your life: relationships, work,
fitness and health, and emotional well-
being. We all get bogged down with
work and family responsibilities from
time to time, but making time for
yourself is necessary so that you can
keep up with all your responsibilities.
TIPS (In general)

-Eat a healthy diet.

-Consume less salt and sugar.
-Reduce consumption of harmful
fats.
-Avoid harmful alcohol
consumption.
-Do not smoke.
-Stay active.
-Check your blood pressure
regularly.
Eat a healthy diet
Eat a combination of different foods, such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and whole grains. By
eating healthy, you will reduce the risk of malnutrition and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such
as diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer.
Consume less salt
and sugar.
Most people get their sodium from salt.
Reduce your salt intake to 5 g per day,
which is about one teaspoon.
Month to month, Consuming excessive
amounts of sugars increases the risk of
tooth decay and unhealthy weight gain.
WHO recommends consuming less than 5%
of total energy intake for additional health
benefits.
Reduce
consumption of
harmful fats.

Consumption of trans fats increases the

harmful LDL cholesterol level in the
bloodstream along with reduction in
the important HDL cholesterol level.
Trans fats increases insulin resistance,
leading to the development of type 2
diabetes
Avoid harmful alcohol consumption.

There is no safe level for

drinking alcohol. Consuming
alcohol can lead to health
problems such as mental and
behavioural disorders, including
alcohol dependence, major
NCDs such as liver cirrhosis,
some cancers and heart
diseases.
Don’t smoke

Smoking tobacco causes NCDs such

as lung disease, heart disease and
stroke. Tobacco kills not only the
direct smokers but even non-smokers
through second-hand exposure.
Currently, there are around 15.9
million Filipino adults who smoke
tobacco but 7 in 10 smokers are
interested or plan to quit.
Stay active

Physical activity is defined as

any bodily movement produced
by skeletal muscles that
requires energy expenditure.
The amount of physical activity
you need depends on your age
group. Increase moderate-
intensity physical activity to 300
minutes per week for additional
health benefits.
Check your
blood pressure
regularly

• Hypertension, or high blood

pressure, is called a “silent killer”.
This is because many people who
have hypertension may not be aware
of the problem as it may not have
any symptoms. If left uncontrolled,
hypertension can lead to heart,
brain, kidney and other diseases.
This is vital in the prevention and
control of hypertension.

lifestyle to build up a healthy
immune system and to avoid
disease. Here, “maintain” means a
